The biggest difference between catholics and protestants is that catholics believe they can be saved by their WORKS, , doing good things, while protestants believe the bible, which says we are saved by the GRACE of God, through faith. Read Martin Luther's writtings, he was a catholic monk that studied the bible and called the catholic church out on their errors. By the way, the catholic church believes MANY things that have no basis in the bible, too many crazy things to list here, DON"T GET ME STARTED!

This post was originally in Auleliel's Advent thread. But because that thread exists to be informative about the Catholic belief (as clearly stated in the title), I don't think that debates and specific attacks between different Christian denominations have any place in it. I have decided to split the posts rather than delete it because the author is new to the forum and might have overlooked this; however, Guns, I feel I should warn you that attacks against any religion (or lack thereof) are not welcome in the Close. You may argue your points but should always be respectful of other people's beliefs - that is the main rule to post in the Close.

Thanks for splitting this, Xar. I was gonna say something. Aul's thread wasn't the right place. As an idea to be discussed, fine, but not there.

Not really interested in this discussion, but I was struck by how much negative prejudice was expressed in this post.

Guns certainly has strong opinions on these things. Let's have some specific thoughts, Guns. And why are you so angry with Catholicism? Why does it bother you if the catholic church believes MANY things that have no basis in the bible?

More to the point, if Catholics believe that they can be saved by what they DO, but Protestants believe that they are already saved simply by having faith, wouldn't one expect the "good deeds" of Catholics to greatly outweigh the "good deeds" of Protestants?

Just sayin'...

Yeah, I'm going to have to stop you on that one. Catholics, though they may teach that we ought to do good works (I'm assuming you have no problems there), but they are not saved by those works... they are saved by the grace and mercy of God through "various channels."

Isn't the Trinity something not-in-the-bible?

Aren't the seven sacrements not-in-the-bible too?

I'm not a bible scholar, but if you start denouncing Christian sects on the basis of the not-in-the-bible things that they believe, I don't think that there will be very many left standing. If any.

And then there's the list of things in-the-bible which aren't so good to believe in....

Funny how your things "not in the Bible" are very Catholic beliefs

Let me level the playing field a little: the Rapture is not in the Bible... or the statement that the Bible contains the mind of God....

Did you know that Aliester Crowley's Satanic Bible was actually the same Bible everyone else was using? It's true... 8)

A fitting post for post 999, which some claim is the number of the Beast :P

That wacky Crowley...

Mr. LaVey's Satanic Bible is dedicated to PT Barnum, who is famous for saying "There's a sucker born every minute." I think that sums up Satanism for me.

It is my hope that the vast majority of Satanists are in it for the sex.

I've heard that's a big draw. But I imagine there's different sects, and some might be a bit less sex, and a bit more evil.
