I just read on www.scifimoviepage.com that this film is now in production. If its true Im very excited to see what they can do with one of my all time favorites.

This has been a project a long time a-coming. Harry Knowles has been trying to launch it since, like, 12 B.C.

I'm looking forward to it, because it's a decent sci-fi/fantasy/adventure story that's not essentially derivative of anything else. As such, it has the potential to be groundbreaking and exciting.

That, and it's been languishing for decades, demanding to be filmed.

How freakin' cool would that be!

Terraformed Mars? or do we just have to suspend our disbelief?

I havent read any of the stories for over a decade, but if memory serves the planet was dying, losing its atmosphere, and thats what made it a great story to me . There had been no space travel up to that point, no Sputnik, no NASA. How did Burroughs know?

The "losing atmosphere" thing was resolved in the first book, IIRC.

Hmmm... I wonder if the movie will be faithful to the way the human women were dressed.

Resurrected this old topic, as 'John Carter' is finally ready to be unleashed on the world. Having seen it, I can confidently recommend it.

A sincere, wholehearted adventure story. Very well done.

Ah, that's incomplete! At least tell us how you got into an advanced screening.

The initial teasers that came out made me very disappointed. The first few trailers were also disappointing. Now I am hearing some good reviews and my hopes are rising.

The "Star Wars" of this generation of 12yos? Heard that at least once.

An early press screening, the embargo has just lifted. The marketing campaign, as has been duly noted elsewhere, does not do the film justice.

I SO want to see this...

Saw the poster in my local cinema yesterday and it looked COOL! Can't remember the UK release date but it wasn't all that far off.

It's opening this week, worldwide. There is a connection between 'The Chronicles...' and 'John Carter', with a protagonist traveling from our world to another. Although, John Carter does not suffer so much from disbelief. Or despair. Or leprosy.

Another successful aspect of the world of Barsoom / Mars in the film is the ancient / lived-in quality. Enjoy...

I'm a little worried based on the previews. I've never read the books, so of course I'm completely new to this story, but when the best tag-line they can come up with is "The first big blockbuster of the year," I feel like I should stay away.

I think everyone agrees that the movie has been getting short shrift in the marketing department. Somebody is failing at their job.

This lack of selling leaves me confused about whether I should see this movie or not myself. I am not sure if the movie is bad or poorly advertised.

Rotten Tomatoes is giving it 74% right now. That's pretty good.

And I think that the fact that they were willing to show the movie to so many people so far in advance speaks well. Klunkers are usually kept tightly under wraps. Maybe this attempt to generate buzz is compensation for earlier failures.

Chances are the marketing department don't even understand the film. (I watched an amusing segment of the Review Show the other day where the panel attempted to discuss this film. It was pretty obvious none of them really "got" it, being self-consciously "serious" artistic types.)

I got into John Carter via the '70's Marvel comic series, and then read the books. It's funny, because Tarzan was way more popular, but none of the comics or tv shows or even movies made me want to read a single book.


Bit of trivia: Frank Miller got his start at Marvel drawing an issue of John Carter (#18 I think).

That actually is better than the official trailers, and good enough that I'm interested in seeing this now.

Saw it last night in 3D; I agree with Rotten Tomatoes and 74% is about right.

Its a great romp, sort of Star Wars starring Riddick.

The quality, continuity, etc, is what you'd expect from Disney and there's some excellent design gone into the flying machines, the backdrops and alien technology (tho' they only hint at the underlying technologies). But the film races along and holds together well enough that it doesn't tax the brain and you can settle down with your popcorn, 3d glasses and just enjoy it.

Well worth it, especially if you have 9-12 year olds.
