Only something this unbelievably stupid would happen in New Mexico (even though Utah's at fault). Beware: this is so freaky it still gives me chills. This is not a joke, this is reprinted from today's Albuquerque Journal:
Funeral Home Sends Brain to Family
by Vic Vela

SANTA FE---Members of an New Mexico family are suing an Espanola funeral home after they found their grandmother's brain in the bag of personal effects given to them after her death.
--The discovery was made the day after the internment, when relatives "smelled a foul odor coming from the bag" they received form DeVargas Funeral Home and Crematory of the Espanola Valley, according to a lawsuit filed on behalf of four family members in state District Court in Albuquerque.
--The bag had been left inside a family member's truck overnight. When family members opened it, they found, along with the woman's belongings, a separate bag that was labeled with her name and the word "brain," the lawsuit alleges.
--"Wouldn't you argee that it was a horrible mistake?" Albuquerque attorney Richard Valle told the Journal. Valle, along with attorney Crios O'Cleireachain, filed the lawsuit. "No loved one's brain should ever be part of those belongings."
--The brain has since been buried with the woman's body.
--Funeral home owner Johnny DeVargas said the fault does not lie with his business and that another entity in Utah--where the woman died--was responsible for what had happened.
Apparently the woman died in a car accident and the brain was bagged outside the body during an autopsy and never replaced. The Gort Funeral Home in Utah swears it explained the circumstances to DeVargas and, of course DeVargas denies this. Whoever embalmed the body is legally responsible for replacing the brain in the head, the body was embalmed by Gort and shipped by plane to Albuquerque where DeVargas picked it up.

It's too bad it was left in the bag like that, if they'd preserved it it'd make a nice curio to display in a jar on your mantelpiece. ;)

I don't like this whole autopsy thing.
She died in a car accident.
Why was her brain taken out of her body?

Dammit, I should have paid more attention to the warning about not reading while eating. I read it and laughed while eating a Cheeto. It went up into my sinuses and I think lodged into my brain. Now I can't do math.

If I am, I am unaware of it. It might be the result of the Cheeto.

*finishes laughing*

To HLT: It is not abnormal autopsy procedure to open the skull if the cause of death is thought to be hidden head trauma.

*thinks of the breadcrumbed and butter fried lambs brain he had in Adelaide*

I don't see the point of it though.
Car accident death = removal of brain in autopsy?

I thought it was only in cases where they suspected foul play.
I Wiki'd it and read that autopsy's are required for accidents.
I don't know....seems excessive to me.

All I can think of (based only on the info in Danlo's original post) is that it doesn't say that the brain was removed during the autopsy. I says it was bagged separately after the autopsy. The brain could have left the body during the accident itself. (I have seen worse.)

 Wow, I was going to make some silly joke about "thinking outside the box" until I read this. Now there is really no point. *bows*.
