AKA, the new Mel Gibson film.
It's a remake of a BBC miniseries from the 80's, interestingly enough, directed by the same guy (Martin Campbell, who also directed Casino Royale). I haven't seen the mini, but based on the new movie, I will.
Gibson's always been an interesting onscreen presence, and as a guy in his 50s now, still has the toughness (if not the nimbleness) he's always had. I read a review of the film that compared him to Gregory Peck and Robert Mitchum, and I agree in that he's still got that quiet strength you don't want to mess with.
The story itself isn't bad. It's a relatively simple revenge story set within the world of the Boston P.D., a defense contractor, and a bunch of unethical people. It feels compressed, which I'm sure it is given the source material, but it still works as a 2 hour film. There's one "duhhhh" moment to the film that I was rolling my eyes over, but it's forgivable.
Gibson's performance is strong. Far better than Signs or the awful What Women Want. In fact, I don't think there's another actor who could have played the part as well as Gibson.
Hopefully people give it a chance, I think it's one of the better movies I've seen lately.
