International Darwin Day Foundation
Darwin Day is a global celebration of science and reason held on or around Feb. 12, the birthday anniversary of evolutionary biologist Charles Darwin. This year marks the 200th anniversary of Charles Darwin's birth.
hmm...
Looks like the site's blurb has not been updated since last year.
Still...
Happy Birthday!

Is Darwin's Birthday the day they hand out Darwin Awards?

I don't think so.

Happy Bicentennial Anniversary of the birthday of the man who proposed one of the greatest scientific theories.

Oh yeah, him too!

Do you know that in the old days, we used to get a day off school for both Lincoln's birthday *and* Washington's birthday? That was before almost all the holidays were moved to Monday observances so we could work them into a long weekend. Yup, that's right, we used to get two days off in February *and* sometimes they even -- gasp! -- fell in the middle of the week!

Jeebus, I'm old...

No offense to Dr King, but he really screwed us there.

Once we started celebrating his day in January is when the higher-ups said "enough," and combined Lincoln's and Washington's birthdays into the generic "Presidents' Day."

Me, I'd like to celebrate all three :) :) :)

Uh...
I think President's Day and Monday holidays happened long before the advent of MLK, Jr. Day.
But I could be wrong...

Nah, the three-day holiday weekend thing started *way* before MLK Day was approved. We had three-day holiday weekends when I was in high school, but MLK Day wasn't a holiday 'til well after that. At least it wasn't in Virginia. For years and years, the third Monday in January was Lee-Jackson Day, honoring those great Rebel patriots who were sons of the Commonwealth. You shoulda heard people howling when the General Assembly proposed rolling the observance into one and making it Lee-Jackson-King Day.

And no, Menolly, you're not crazy. Lincoln's Birthday on the 12th and Washington's Birthday on the 22nd. 8)
