Impact

Is "Impact" by Douglas Preston a sci -fi? The promos talk about crystals, gamma rays and meteors. The strange thing about this book is that my Dad (88 years old and reads nothing but crime mysteries and war stories) is currently reading this, along with that it's a very recent book and my Dad only checks books out of the library...
