MGM is developing Henry Bates and the Sorcerer's Balls, a film spoof of the Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings franchises, Variety reported. Written by David Morgasen, James R. Stein and Timothy Stack (Son of the Beach), Bates will be produced by Ricky Strauss under his Ricochet Films banner, the trade paper reported.

In the parody, the wizard Gandolfini battles the evil wizard Enron, with the help of Henry Bates, the rightful king of the land of Middlefinger, the trade paper reported.

MGM bought the script days ago and has already engaged the writers for a two-week polish, indicating the studio plans to move quickly.

Well, call me a purist or a prude...But, I was disgusted when I read that. I hope it flops, but since everything seems to be going down the "tiolet" these days in movies and other media, it probably won't.

Tolkien, I think, would have been sickened by it.

Good point, I've now changed my mind. I think it'll be crap. Tolkiens work should be respected.

Eh, lampoons and caricatures have existed since about five seconds after the first man thought he'd created something worth bragging about... or maybe only five seconds after some other guy said the first guy's thing was cool.

There's good satire, and there's bad satire. Writers are notoriously an egostical bunch that don't care much for criticism, but many of them have a sense of humor about their works, even take it as a mark of accomplishment (Someone once asked the director Kevin Smith how he knew he'd made it, and his answer was, "When someone makes a porno title off of something you did.") It's hard to say what Tolkein's take on it would be.

I'll see it.

Syl, your comments made me suddenly wonder if some of the earliest primitive cave drawings are parodies of others. (?) Maybe the long-tusked saber-tooth tiger was a satire and the real animal only had tiny teeth.

I think that a good spoof or parody is the most sincere form of a compliment.. and with Bored of The Rings It made me appreciate how much better the original work truly was.

Written in the gloaming of their college days, just before they started National Lampoon, Douglas C. Kenney and Henry N. Beard wrote Bored of the Rings. It's dated--references to Nixon, drugs, and consumer products circa 1969 crowd every page--but darn it, Bored of the Rings is still funny nearly 30 years later:
"'Goodbye, Dildo,' Frito said, stifling a sob. 'I wish you were coming with us.' 'Ah, yes. But I'm too old for that sort of thing now,' said the old boggie, feigning a state of total quadriplegia. 'Anyway, I have a few small gifts for you,' and he produced a lumpy parcel, which Frito opened somewhat unenthusiastically in view of Dildo's previous going-away present [the ring]. But the package only contained a short, Revereware sword, a bulletproof vest full of moth holes, and several well-thumbed novellas with titles like Elf Lust and Goblin Girl..."


my fav charac.in the parody is the same as in the original. Good Ole Tim Benzadrino, with his faithful flatmate Hashberry.

Parodies are fun, when well-done. Depends on execution, as well as the taste and mood of the audience.

There's a lesbian softcore parody called Lord of the G-Strings out, with Smirnoff the (drunken) Wizards foisting off a magical, evil g-string to a young throbbit named Dildo Saggins. She agrees to go on the quest, but takes her girlfriends Horney and Spam along. It is very silly, sometimes funny, and generally very...ah...scenic.

Definitely. I read that book when I was a young lad too. It was cute, but certainly not worth more than the 25 cents I payed for it. Certainly not movie material.

But, if they ever decide to make "Harry Pothead and the sorcerers got stoned" starring Cheech & Chong, I'm there!

i respect the books, but i also love that sort of thing..you cant be too serious about things like that...i mean...just because someone parodies or makes jokes about a certain thing doesnt mean they dont like it at all...

who knows..

as far as im concerned, the books have already been done right with this trilogy, so i dont mind a parody

Now if a parody had been done in the middle of releasing the trilogy, that would be annoying.
