A River Runs Through It

Amazing film and so beautifully written.
Like many fly fishermen in Western Montana where the summer days are almost Arctic in length, I often do not start fishing until the cool of the evening. Then in the Arctic half-light of the canyon, all existence fades to a being of my soul and memories and the sounds of the Big Blackfoot River and a four-count rhythm and the hope that a fish will rise.
Eventually, all things merge into one, and a river runs through it. The river was cut by the world's great flood and runs over rocks from the basement of time. On some of those rocks are timeless raindrops. Under the rocks are the words, and some of the words are theirs.
I am haunted by waters.

And young Brad Pitt doesn't hurt it none, eh?

meh. brad is cute, sure he is. there's no denyin brad is cute. and he was good in that role too. perfect i'd say.
but me, i go for the craig sheffer.
and yeah, this film is one of the reasons i think Redford's directing skill FAR FAR outweigh his acting skills.
i'm 10 times more likely to go see a film that Redford's directed than i am to go see one he's actually acting in.
my love of Redford's directing and, most particularly his adaptations from book to film, began with
Ordinary People.
Milagro Beanfield War was also awesome.
i wish Norman Maclean could have seen
A River Runs Through It come to life on the screen. i'm guessing he would have liked it very much. it's a fabulous adaptation.
(i own it.

Hey, I loved "The Legend of Bagger Vance". A movie that had nothing to do with Golf.
Pitt's best role, by far, was "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button". I love that film. It deals with death from the first moment and yet never becomes maudlin. I can't watch it all the time. But when I do, the film never gets old. Incredibly well done.

Wow. Reminds me of early parts of Runes. I wonder if Anele ever did any fly fishing in his youth.

I'm one of the few here who liked that film, too. I sympathize with your points on Pitt, but I'm still partial to Fight Club.

I don't care what any of you will say, and I'm sure many will disagree.
Troy was great, and Pitt was great in it. His contempt for Aggie. His feelings for Briseis. His fighting. All very well done.
The look he gave Priam as he dragged Hector's body away was superb! The most intense "FUCK YOU!!!" I've ever seen in a look.
And the scene with him and Priam, then him crying as he went to get Hector's body... I remember my 9th grade English teacher talking about that scene. About the things Achilles had done; what he'd accomplished; his extraordinary prowess as a warrior; etc etc. And here he was, crying. Pitt played it all so well.
Great stuff.
And yet, he was surpassed by Eric Bana as Hector!

I've not seen Troy. I've seen River, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Fight Club, Thelma & Louise, and Snatch. I've liked them all.

Also very good in Legends of the Fall, Seven Years in Tibet and 12 Monkeys--supposedly very good in Inglourious Basterds. Worst film by far was The Devil's Own: couldn't hold an Irish accent to save his life...

I enjoyed him in Interview with the Vampire.
I think Pitt is a decent actor despite his looks

I just wish he would stretch a bit. I would like to see him as a bad guy for once or an ugly homeless guy.

I've long held the view that there are only so many stories, that are basically revised and re-revised with contemporary and topical overlays, Shakespeare, Dickens, Arabian Nights etc all peter out around 35 or so. Equally there are only so many characters and the stock heros, villains, leading ladies etc also recycle. The actors that play these characters also recycle; there will always be an Arnie/Sly muscle man hero, a John Wayne type character, a Robert Mitchum, a Joli etc. etc.
Brad Pitt has always struck me as the natural successor to Robert Redford and he has collaborated with him more than once. Redford in his day was as big a romantic/heartthrob lead as Pitt is today (taking the relative media of the day into account) and he plays many similar roles. Think of some of Redford's roles and Pitt would slot in very neatly to those role/characters.
'River' is a magic movie and anyone who has ever flicked flies would be instantly transported into that magic.
Having said that I'm suprised he didn't drown...bit of licence there methinks!

I really didn't like Legends of the Fall. It's my kind of movie but it was trying sooooo hard to be "meaningful" and "emotional" that it seemed more like melodrama than drama. Pitt wasn't bad but he was fighting with a bad script in that movie.

I agree, LoftheF went over the top but I did like Pitt and Hopkins' characters--and I'm always a sucker for a Horner soundtrack.

I loved that movie. The writer of the book that inspired it (the film follows the book much closer than most) was seventy something when he started writing and was blown off by the first publisher that agreed to look at his work because "these stories have trees in them."
Fight club and 12 monkeys are my fave Pitt films, but Meet Joe Black was my fave Pitt role. He was so good at being creepy.
