A dollar and a dream

I won 71 dollars in the lottery the other day. 4 out of 6 numbers. And the other two numbers were just one digit away from winning 2 million.

But it set my brain on fire. 2 million..........what would I do with 2 million?

1 pay all my debts
2 Quit my job

but beyond that I am just not sure. Travel for sure. Help a few people with medical bills. Adopt a second dog.

Damn, am I boring.

I like your numbers 1 and 2, lorin. I would make sure to set aside enough from the payout to ensure that I could live off the interest for the rest of my life. And I would travel, and buy a home free and clear. But the rest of it -- I think I might set up some sort of foundation. Not sure who my foundation would be targeted to help. I might just donate it to my alma mater and my daughters'. Maybe a scholarship fund. I dunno.

I mean, what's the point of having more money than you will need to support yourself for the rest of your life?

I like ali's outlook.
Sounds like a plan to me.

Long ago I would have said buy a house outright and live debt free, but I just bought one for $35,000 and my mortgage is about half what my rent would have been, plus I'll have it paid off in 15 years!
So that set me wondering what would I buy now if I won the lottery?
Well first off I'd buy the best publicist for my music and my novel that I could. I wouldn't do this to make more money, but to assure a larger audience!
Next I'd buy a large lot of land that I'd make available to Amtgard for events.

Well, 2 million dollars isn't that much in euros these days ;-), but still it's a nice amount. What I'd do?

- pay off the mortgage on my house and move out to a new house (not too big, just a bit bigger and more recently built)
- put money in the long-termn savings accounts of my kids
- make sure my parents-in-law have a bit more financial room, as they've been incredibly helpful during two difficult periods in our life
- buy some fancy music-making stuff
- oh maybe work a day less and put some money in my wife's business
- give some money to various charities

Exactly. That's why I'd never quit my job for that.

The jackpot in the state lottery here in the Netherlands is usually around 25-30 million euros. Now that's a mindboggling amount.

2 million USD = 1,44 million EUR. Pocket money, I say.

I agree! The big jackpot in around here is something like 140 million dollars this week, but I aim for the smaller jackpots. The odds are much better and I can do a lot with 2 million. Hell, I could do some serious damage with 50 grand.

And do what with it? Would you use it for your artworks, or go into farming/ranching, or what?

I have a complex mapped out in my head.

the first part near the entry way would be scaled down versions of world land-marks. including but not limited to - the Eiffel Tower, Stone Hedge, the Statue of Libery, the Easter Island heads, Empire State Building, Chrysler Building, Big Ben, Lincoln Memorial, Space Needle, Mount Rushmore, Old Man of the Mountain.....

then a hall for our "mannequins" - the Zen Men. including but not limited to : the Fish Tank Man, the Man in the Catho-Ray Suit, Gravity King - Oddjack the Acid Clown...

then a working replica of the playground from my favorite place growing up - Garrison Elementary School.

a rail car converted into a gallery for some of paintings, collages and sculptures.

a sculpture garden with brick trail path winds it's way through the complex.

I'm sure with enough money I can be convinced to come up with more oddities. :)
