Ah, the first pic looked like "Linden and the PVC pipe". The last pic looks much better.

The heels are described as "two wide bands of dull grey iron" (emphasis mine).

Personally, I have always imagined that the heels were not of a larger diameter than the staff itself, or were perhaps only fractionally larger. But that's just me; I mention it in case you want to try some other ideas.

Also, I have seen pictures that indicate that such heels need not be at the very very ends of the staff.

Well, if you're gonna be picky WF....

Actually, though...now that I think, probably not a capped end? Vain's hand went all the way through...

Love the Linden on the mountain, though.

Good point. Heels are made to wrap the wood, keep it from splintering. They don't actually cover the ends.

 Exactly my thoughts.

I had thought the metal ends would a spiral or interleaved spiral of metal that is about six inches in length, with a rounded cap that covers the end of the staff. A paired set.

A 1st edition of TIW may shed some light.
(but not much)

In the first book, when he is explaning to the council, he says the staff had carvings on it.
