Yet distance did not save her. The fumbling inadequacy of her parents did not save her. Just once, she had tried to reach out to Covenant. He had refused to speak to her.
This one almost slipped past my radar. Does anybody else here know which incident Donaldson is referring to?

I think way back in first chron's, when she phoned him, but he was summoned to the land in the middle of it [fell, hit his head on table?]

And woke up at the end to the shrill shrieking of a phone company disconnect signal. TIW. The wound on his forehead was paralleled in the Land by Hile Troy's attack which almost killed Covenant.

It was Elena's intervention that prevented Covenant from speaking to her. That and the ordeal at the bar with Susie Thurston and sheriff Litton.
