I read up to Moreta. I liked them all but was worrying it would end up like Xanth, so I took a break from Pern. That was about 15 years ago...

What the heck's wrong with Xanth??? I like those books! And no, they aren't like Xanth. I'll give you a hint though: Com-Pewter, the nice machine.

I think I stopped around "Masterharper of Pern", but I have read most of the stuff up to then. Some of it twice.

What's wrong with.....? I liked them too, at first. I thought the first three were pretty funny, while having a good story underneath. But then Piers forgot what a "trilogy" is and just kept going. Unfortunately, the ideas didn't go with him. By the sixth book (Nightmare?) it was no longer interesting. Unfortunately, I kept reading Xanth until about Ogre, Ogre. Now I break out in a cold sweat whenever I see one of those darn things......I still like his "Battle Circle", "Ox/Orn/Omnivore" "Prostho Plus" and "Chthon/Pthor" books.

Good for you. Have you read any of the Pern books?

No. I really like dragons too. Idell Gatchel told me quite a long time ago that I should read them. I'd better get busy.

I can't believe you're posting on this with no actual knowledge of the topic....then again, that's never stopped you before.

I was posting a response to the Xanth comments. Other than that all I've said is that I haven't and should read the books. Kaboom!

Yeah, that's true; but it still takes brass to do it.

Well, in any event, the Pern books are really good. Well, at least the first 6-7 are, I haven't read anything after Moreta.

I look forward to reading them. Which is the first?

Uhh, that's not so simple. I don't think the first dozen even have "Pern" in the title. Here's what I think the order is:

Dragonflight
Dragonquest
Dragonsong
Dragonsinger
White Dragon
Get Off The Unicorn (collection of short stories; only The Smallest Dragonboy is a Pern story)
Moreta
Nerilka's Story
Dragonsdawn
Chronicles of Pern
Dragonseye
Renegades of Pern
Masterharper of Pern

There's more, but this'll do you for quite some time.

Wow. Okay. I'll give Dragonflight a shot.

I like this series, although it is a bit fluffy at times....All the Weyrs of Pern should be in the listing above. And, there's one other, the title of which escapes me - F'lessan is the main character. I bought this book but didn't read it through, so I can't remember the title.

Dolphins of Pern

There's a really big list at www.annemccaffrey.org

All of the books are in order. :D

Yeah, I missed Dragonsdawn, which I think is the third book in the series. I just saw that hardback copied of Dragonflight go for $500 and up on ebay! I think I know where a $25 copy is; I better go get it quick!

After further review, I don't know where Dragonsdawn fits in the series. Depending on where you look, it's book 10 or book 1. And I see I didn't miss it earlier, I was just lookin gin the wrong place. I should look harder next time. 8O
