So often in fiction some character or characters are presumed deceased, although their bodies have not been found. Then suddenly they turn up alive after all. Will this turn out to be the case for our Ranyhyn friends Mhornym and Naybahn?

Good question... I think it could go either way, but I'm hoping they're alive... sure, they'll probably just get devoured by the Worm, but still

I believe that these two Ranyhyn are still alive. First of all, if they found their way down to Covenant and Joan, they can surely find their way back out. Also, TC and the Humbled have to have a way to get the hell outta there, and I don't see that happening without the horses.
But maybe that's just my optimism.

Alive-I don't think I could have handled the Final Chrons w/o Ranyhyn...

Why else would he need the name of the Insequent's steed?

I'm thinking they're alive because tropes are so common, unless Donaldson pulls a reverse trope. On the one hand, I don't like it for being common to the lamest action movies, on the other hand, I don't want the pretty horses to be killed either.

I don't want them to be, but I think they are dead, and the Har. will whistle up replacements...

I think it's 50/50..
We have lost several Rahnyn throughout the Chronicles. And they are mortal, it is entirely reasonable that they got caught in the Tsunami..
However.. Donaldson knows his audience love these horses. Never before has he killed 2 off at the same time, and never before have any Ranyhyn died without describing the bravery, understanding, selflessness and love of their final actions.. Thus I find it hard to believe that when the Humbled call the Ranyhyn it will be two different ones who respond.
And whether Mhornym and Naybahn survived or not, it is irrelevant to the question of who / what will Covenant ride. His next horse was the one belonging to the Ardent.

Covenant never rides the Ranyhyn, so from that perspective it is irrelevant. But are Clyme and Branl going to run alongside the Ardent's steed?

If they lived, we'll get a bit of a back-glimpse of the struggles/cost they went through [kinda like when, I believe it was Mhoram, whistled his up to Revelstone, and it arrived skinny and in pain from the obstacles it confronted]
If it didn't live, two replacements...probably relatives...will respond to the call of the Haruchai. [that's what I think the likelier...but just barely]
I can't wait to see the Ardent's mount when TC names it.

Upon reflection - and I might be wrong here - but the masters at the end of the book were waiting for the Ranyhyn. I belieeve their superior and heightened senses would be able to determine if they are alive or not.. Perhaps the Masters already know that they survived.

Why should they be dead? Raninym are faster and stronger than Haruchai, especially when said haruchai have a weak leper on their hands. If they had a way down they would have a way back up.
Forward the Raninym!

Maybe one died and one survived?
