ok, so on a scale of 1 to 10 (one being "saw it coming a galaxy away" 10 being "it shocked me like a life ending shock in the force"), how surprised were you when Darth Vader turned out to be Luke's dad?

I was pretty shocked. If I had been plugged into the internet I would have probably heard rumors.

Oh yeah the number. Uh. 8.

One word for that scene. Amazing.
I saw it coming a mile away

I was about 8 or younger when I first saw that scene... so I was pretty shocked... I wasn't one for foreshadowing back then.

I'd give it about a 10 for me. It struck me in the face like one of those face-striker things!

It didn't shock me at all, because I assumed Vader was lying. You know, to keep Luke off balance, try to turn him, all that. By the time Obi Wan's ghost confirmed it in RoJ, the impact was gone.

I was a little kid when I saw it and felt like someone hit me over the head with a brick.

I'm with Fist on this one because that was my inital reaction when I first saw it. Vader was basically losing the fight to begin with. So he brings up the ole 1-2 and ( I thought) decided to screw with the kid's brain.
But then Vader did drop a hint before the bomb...
Obi-wan never told you what happened to your father did he?
What would make this big black bald UGLY guy bring that up for?
Of course I was full into the scene and didn't notice the line until later.
here's a question.. when did anyone figgure out that Leia was Luke's sister before he dropped THAT bomb on her? Was it at the end when he's dangling like forrest gump off the antennae from Cloud City? Or...??
Ewww he kissed his sister too...ewww. I love my sisters but I wouldn't kiss em THAT way... ewwww

I give it a 9. Because it hadn't been picked yet, and because I nearly crapped myself when he said that. Of course, after I removed my 3-D goggles, it didn't seem like such a big deal.

If you just ate alphabet soup, that could really make things confusing.

Someone spoiled this for me, so I knew before I saw the movie - which pisses me off, now that I think about it.
As for Leia, I recall a conversation with my sister where she told me that she thought Leia would turn out to be Luke's sister b/c he was able to communicate with her using the Force. So that one was spoiled as well.

I give it a 5 on the impact scale, because at the time, I was honestly too young and too caught up in the visuals of the scene to really appreciate what was being said. Besides, I'm pretty sure I was still in shock over Luke's sudden amputation. I never saw
that coming! I'd give that moment a 10 on the ol' what-the-hell-just-happened? scale. Vader's overpowering of Luke defined that scene for me, not what he said. It showed who was boss then; that no one, not even a Luke Skywalker, can go one-on-one with a Dark Lord Of The Sith and come out alive in, er, one piece. Vaderrrr...

My name is Luke so I have been living with this scene since I was born. I hate it. A lot.
