... and I'm not talking coke here.
It's not about whole lyrics. It's about a line or two, a rhyme or maybe a small verse you think that is poetry, extremely funny or in some other way exceptional ...
Johnny Cash wrote:Now I taught the weeping willow how to cry
And I showed the clouds how to cover up a clear blue sky
Steve Goodman wrote:And the sons of Pullman porters
And the sons of engineers
Ride their father's magic carpets made of steel
Type O Negative wrote:I will deny my role as a human
Holding myself hostage with no demands
It's better to burn quickly and bright
Than slowly and dull without a fight
Pink Floyd wrote:And you run, and you run to catch up with the sun, but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in a relative way, but you're older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death
Danzig wrote:Show me how the gods kill
Blue Chieftains wrote:If he was here to tell us just what was what
He'd give his son a good kick in the butt
and we would hang on every word he say
I think Hank woulda done it this way

Yes wrote:Workings of man, crying out from the fires set aflame
By his blindness to see that the warmth of his being
Is promised for his seeing, his reaching so clearly
Yes wrote:Master of Light, all pure chance
As exists cross divided in all encircling mode
Oh, closely guarded plan awaken in our heart
Yes wrote:Like the time I ran away, and turned around
And you were standing close to me
Like the time I ran away, and turned around
...and you were standing close to me
The Moody Blues wrote:The secret of your beauty
And the mystery of your soul
I've been searching for in everyone I meet
And the times I've been mistaken
It's impossible to say
And the grass is growing
Underneath our feet
The Moody Blues wrote:Once beneath the stars
The universe was ours
Love was all we knew
And all I knew was you
I wonder if you know
I wonder if you think about it
Once upon a time
In your wildest dreams
...Yeah, I know all the lines from Yes are from the same song.

It's a short song but so beautiful to me, Led Zeppelin's "Thank You":
If the sun refused to shine, I would still be loving you.
When mountains crumble to the sea, there will still be you and me.
Kind woman, I give you my all, Kind woman, nothing more.
Little drops of rain whisper of the pain, tears of loves lost in the days gone by.
My love is strong, with you there is no wrong,
together we shall go until we die. My, my, my.
An inspiration is what you are to me, inspiration, look... see.
And so today, my world it smiles, your hand in mine, we walk the miles,
Thanks to you it will be done, for you to me are the only one.
From the Grateful Dead's "Cassidy":
I have seen where the wolf has slept by the silver stream.
I can tell by the mark he left you were in his dream.
Ah child of countless trees, ah child of boundless seas.
What are you, what are you meant to be?
And pretty much anything Bruce Springsteen has ever written.

A pointless life has run its course,
The red rimmed eyes, the tears still run

Our weary eyes still stray to the horizon
Though down this road we've been so many times

One of my favorite from REM is a bit of what I think may have been a misheard lyric from Wendell Gee
He had a dream one night
That the tree had lost its middle
So he built a trunk of chicken wire
To try to hold it up
But the wire, the wire turned to lizard skin
And when he climbed inside
There wasn't even time to say
Goodbye to Wendell Gee
The sixth line I've always interpreted as "and made a grinding sound." Which seems a bit far off from what the lyrics online say. But seems much more poetic. It's a pity when that happens.
A couple more favorites.
Bob Geldof - A Hole To Fill
I left the pub last night
And I was just in time
To see them break my windows
And slash my tyres
I'm a liberal I thought
As I felt my anger rise
I was desperately searching
For my feminine side
But my feminine side
Was on her morning coffee break
I beat the shit out of one
And boy, I felt great
Bob Walkenhorst
You can have it all, just not all in the same place.
You remind me of someone
I don't know who
maybe the ghost
of things yet to come
or the shining eyes
of my daughter dear
still waiting to be born
or the loving gaze of Mother Earth
still flirting with the universe
Sometimes the facts can make the truth disappear
