Prayer for Answers

One day I prayed to god,
not knowing what god was,
not knowing if god was,
asking merely to find out.
My gaze fell upon a woman,
standing in a park
by her daughter's lemonade stand
keeping the secret of all secrets
that the cost benefit analysis of the stand
resulted in a slight deficit for the family through the summer,
knowing that by next summer's end the daughter
would be on to some other more or less trivial pursuits.
