Low expectations ... that's the key. I had no idea what to expect, and was weirdly surprised by this movie. Granted, I watched this after coming home from Fest of Ales, so I'm can't say whether the movie holds up to a sober audience. But I found myself laughing quite a bit, and when the special effects kicked in for some pretty bad ass fantasy/wizardly action, I was surprised and impressed. The movie had me thinking several times, "What the hell am I watching?" I couldn't tell if it was a genre-spoof, a pot-comedy, a (somewhat) legitimate fantasy adventure story in its own right. Much of it was a confused mess, and the humor could easily be dismissed as vulger and stupid, but for me this worked as a character comedy, more like Napolean Dynamite, where the jokes aren't the point, the characters are the source of humor.

Rotten Tomatoes: 26%/39%.

On second thought ... I tried to watch this again, to make sure it wasn't the beer goggles. It didn't hold up to a second viewing.

I couldn't imagine watching it twice (except maybe if I'm :bounce03: ), but I enjoyed it. I laughed pretty hard at some scenes, groaned as hard at others. It was bad, but intentionally so. I've come to expect that from Danny McBride's movies. And since the last Franco movie I saw was Howl, it was a nice change of pace.

just to build a consensus, yeah kept my expectations low. Enjoyed it more than I thought I would. pretty sure it would grow tedious on repeated viewings.

The fairy scene was a classic, other than that, disappointing.
