The Land in Pictures!

by Mr. Land
As we all wait patiently for news of a publishing date for The Runes of the Earth I thought I could help distract some of us by asking if anyone is familiar with a 1983 book called Realms of Fantasy by Malcolm Edwards and Robert Holdstock. It is a coffee table size book featuring background information, interview snippets, and artist renderings of such classic fantasy worlds as Middle Earth, Earthsea, Melnibone, and of course, The Land. Donaldson's world is spectacularly brought to life by artist Mark Harrison who offers breathtaking pictures of Kevin's Watch, the Caemora at Coercri, the Andelanian Hills, and Foul's Creche.
Check it out if you can!

I've never heard of it, but it sounds cool. I just picked up a copy of THE ATLAS OF THE LAND by K W Fonstad for under $4 on ebay. Do you know if there'll be any maps or paintings of Mordant? I'd really like to see that.

Look in the art gallery Mr. Land (in the Album function above)...is that the same artist? If not I'm HIGHLY interested in this book...

What have you got against the artists in the art gallery?

oh don't really know how 2 take that sir...I'm merely suggesting that some of the renderings we have in the Art Gallery might be Harrison's...

Danlo, you said if it's NOT the same artist, then you'd be interested in buying the book. So I ask again, why don't you like the artist you see in the gallery?

I think what he meant was: since we already have that artist's work, he doesn't need the book.

xactly...I may not agree with the some renderings out of Vain's book (which might be the same book Mr. Land is talking about) but I never said I disliked the artist. Why must u stir up trubble where there is none? And why r u so defensive about the art gallery?

I just checked ebay and found another copy of this book at $6.99. Is it worth bidding on? Should I wait for more copies?

I just got the book about 10 minutes ago. It looks really cool; definitely worth what I paid for it. I would have paid up to $20 for this book, no problem. The pics of Starfire's Gem in the Art Gallery are from this book. No paintings, though. Just lots of maps and floor plans, exactly what a surveying draftsman like me likes.

I wasn't trying to stir anything up. I just wanted to know what you meant, and to give you a chance to clarify if you didn't mean what you typed the way I read it. I don't know the artist, nor am I endorsed by him/her. I am not a member of the Art Gallery, nor am I endorsed by it, its affiliates, or assigns. There, are you happy now?

That we should share the visual joy with the rest of this place? HA! I am selfish, pitiful and VILE!

OH, I have this book. Great pics...and yep, Danlo, the pics Vain uploaded into the art gallery are from this book.
What's cool about it, is that it has art from other fantasies as well, including Middle Earth, Earthsea, Ghromenghast, Atlantis, Hyborea and Melinbone.
Actually, the pics of Melinbone are what sent me off to find the Elric books. There is an awesome one depicting the end of "Stormbringer" when Elric blows the Horn of Fate and the huge hand holding the scales of justice, the balance appears in the sky and Stormbringer leaps out of its scabbard and slays him. The pic is in black and white..but it is incredible. There is also a pic of the Ships of Hell sailing over a blasted plain picking up the creatures of chaos. OH, and then there's an incredible, double-paged, full color depiction of Imrryr, the Dreaming City. AWESOME!!
Okay, got a little carried away there. The pics of the Land are great too, as are the ones from Middle Earth and Earthsea...Fist would like those.

There's a really cool one of the Tombs, with Ahra looking in as Ged lights his staff in the darkness.
What I also found interesting is a quote from Donaldson about how he never intended to write a Second Chrons, but LDR was coming up with such horrid plot ideas that an outline for both the Second AND the Last Chrons began to form in his head...
Way cool!!

I just ordered this book from Amazon for 13 quid - which I think is a bargain. I had it years ago but a mate borrowed it and then opened up a second hand bookshop.
