Boston/New England 2012 Fest-ivity Discussion

The notion of a Boston or New England mini-Fest has gained a lot of support in the Elohimfest 3 thread. So I thought I would spin it out so that we can grow this idea.

It seems to me one of the things we should think about early is, what kinds of things would people like to do when they are here? I mean, besides get together, drink, play Scrabble, and hit on jonnyredleader. If we know what we would want to do, then we would know where to go, and then people would know if it was interesting.

Not to put to sharp a point on it, but the thing with New England is we have this concept called "seasons". So "when do you want to visit?" is a question that must be asked at the same time as "what do you want to do?". Fall activities are different from winter activities are different from summer activities up here. Then again, for some activities, season's don't matter.

My opinion is: summer's are warm and nice but the same as everywhere else, fall is glorious, spring is meh, and winter sucks. If the concensus is some sort of autumnal celebration, Columbus Day weekend (in mid-October) is the best time IMO.

Ooooh, autumn in New England! Wait, it's not gonna be cold, is it? We froze our butts off at WFC in Columbus last fall. Of course, that was a few weeks later, over Halloween weekend -- but Boston is further north than Columbus.

But seriously, folks -- timing may depend on school vacations. That's why we've usually met in summer in the past. Dunno if that's going to be an issue with the folks who plan to come (it doesn't affect me any more ).

As for activities, here is my own personal list:
1. Wagamama.
2. Salem. (October would be perfect!)
3. Louisa May Alcott's birthplace/home/whatever it is.

Columbus Day weekend usually coincides with Indian Summer. So warm, snuggy air filled with the smell of dried oak and maple leaves.

yeah october is a good month to do anything on the east coast cause the trees are GORGEOUS at that time of year.

i'd prefer sooner rather than later tho so i vote for spring rather than fall.

Changed the title to say "2012".

If we do a summer trip, I recommend involving Cape Cod. Maybe something like this: grab a ferry to Martha's Vineyard, rent us some mopends, drive around the island, check out places where they filmed Jaws, wave at Obama's secret service agents, do some beach, then ferry back to Hyannis to crash land at High Lord Tolkien's house, sleep it off there.

Or, as Radar O'Reilly would put it, to the Cape of Cod.

*checking Hebrew calendar for High Holiday dates for 5773*

OK, if there is anyway I can make it to Boston, we're good as far as the High Holidays go. Sukkos, Shemini Atzeret and Simchas Torah all fall during the first nine days of October, 2012. Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur fall earlier, during September.

...although it would be really cool to eat a festive meal in a Sukkah in true harvest weather.

Does that mean that the first nine days of October are unavailable for you? Or available? I ask because early October is nice, late October is not so much. Columbus Day (long weekend for some people) is Oct. 8.

If I am able to make it, those festive days are fine, way. They're not ones I typically observe. However, should I make it and a local CHABAD or Lubavitch offers a festive meal in their sukkah to the public, I may want to try and go one night.

Simchas Torah involves a lot of alcohol, too. ;)

I would be in for sure. It would give me a chance to reconnect in person with some of my high school friends I have reconnected with through facebook. Essentially that means that I would be making a trip to the cape no matter what season we decide on.

Yes, sarge, I remember you are from beautiful NH.

Red Sox might be tough in October. It'd have to be a good season. :) But if the summer, certainly.
