a two-fold kinda thread.

i know yer all tv fanatics over here in tv shows forum and yeh've all got computers so i'm bringin yahs a problem.

first off, i've been watching Prime Suspect. it's okay for a cop show. regular cast of characters in the precinct, nypd blue-ish kinda show. first episode looked pretty cookie cutter but actually each episode has gotten better.
tonight i watched the 5th episode and have decided i'm invested. i really like it.

its not a rip at all of the Granada Television's series. it's it's own thing and maria bello is damn good. her jane timoney is not helen mirren's jane tennison. (from all reports la plante, the creator of prime suspect approves of where bello has taken the character)

but back to the thread and my little problem.
so i liked this most recent episode (titled "regrets, i've had a few", all the episodes are titled which is kinda cool) and i REALLY liked the music but i can't find the episode credits to find out what tracks they used.
at the very end is Do Right Woman, but it was so short that i couldn't tell whose version it was. the music in the end credits was good too, very bluesy.
but i couldn't find credits anywhere.

so, here's a thread where we can talk about tv cop and detective shows (cause this isn't the only one i like) or tv cops, or tv detectives, or who is the coolest tv detective and why, and, you know, like that. right?

and also, if any of you can figure out how to find the music credits you would really be doin me a favor and i'd prob'ly owe ya one.

Currently, I watch Castle and Bored to Death. Of the alphabet crime shows, the only one I watch is NCIS, but I feel it's probably about time to let that one go. Though if we're counting agents of various sorts and not just dicks, there's also Justified, which just keeps getting better.

I've watched an episode of Prime Suspect, it wasn't bad. I really want to like Castle, but I can't. Used to love NCIS, but it's devolved into an all-things-to-everyone, nudge-nudge farce.

I really enjoyed the American version of Life on Mars until the final episode.

Life on Mars was good. I liked the final episode, though. IIRC, that wasn't the ending they wanted, but when it got the axe, they did what they could to wrap it up.

I think the problem with NCIS is the producers' unwillingness to screw with the characters' homeostasis. I was pretty glad when Jenny bit the bullet, but how many directors do we have to go through? Even if Gibbs isn't going to step up, are we still really supposed to believe Vance and other come-and-go functionaries are ignorant enough to try to walk over him? With the minor exception of DiNozzo, and maybe David, all the other characters are stuck in a rut.

i've done searches for music from tv shows and commercials before and usually can find what i'm looking for but i guess maybe this episode is too new.

so you guys have mentioned shows i've never heard of!! (of course i got rid of my tv about five years or so ago and only started watching tv shows again on hulu in the last year or two)

i've watched a couple of Castle episodes and feel the same way about it as cail, i wanted to like it but just didn't.

i watched 2 episodes of Justified and i REALLY wanted to like it for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is that it takes place in kentucky and it's got mr. gorgeous playing the lead (sheriff bullock = ) but, and i knew this would be a possiblity when i watched the first episode, there's the accents which are seriously hit or miss on a few of the actors in the first 2 episodes and which annoys me no end. honestly, bad accents have kept me from liking a host of performances in a variety of tv shows and movies (not the least of which were tom hanks and gary sinese's REALLY bad accents in The Green Mile.)
conversely, a good accent will plug me into the land of suspension of disbelief quicker than you can say "ayuh" even in a BAD movie which was the case with fred gwynne's jud crandall in Pet Semetary!

so yeah, on viewing the first two episodes of Justifed which i really really wanted to like, i just couldn't take the accents. but i fully admit that i didn't really give the show a chance to grow, which all tv shows do as casts settle in and writers get comfortable. (remember how HORRIBLE mulder and scully were in the first season of x files?? LOL!!)

the two shows you guys mention that i haven't heard of are Bored to Death and Life on Mars. i'll be looking those up, thanks!

i have no clue as to why but i've never watched NCIS. well maybe an episode here and there but it just never hooked me.

and yes, sheriff, this thread is meant to include any and all kinds of agents and whatnot. the first one that comes to mind is jack bauer. i never did watch 24 either, tho i thought it was a cool premise when it came out.

i'd even include the Law & Order and other such courtroom type shows cause i really LOVED some of those detectives, namely this particular crew,




danlo, andy sipowicz was THE reason i watched NYPD Blue!

and menolly, honestly i LOVED Barney Miller (and Fish). one of mine and my dad's shared all time favorite cop shows!

oh yeah and i meant to mention that i'm waiting for the next season of The Killing.
Linden and Holder remind me a LOT of Scully and Mulder.

I've already said this in the Justified thread, but after the pilot, the rest of the first season is very hit or miss. If someone was just getting into it, I'd say watch the first and last episode of the first season and not worry too much about the rest. The second season is f***ing awesome, though.

Bored to Death skipped under my radar for a while. It's pretty good, though. A writer's or pothead's detective series (or a pothead writer's, naturally). Ted Danson and Jason Schwartzman are outstanding. Zach Galifianakis is the weak point for me, but some people really like that style of humor, and most of the time he's bearable.

Castle is just fun. Not much to it. Similar to Mika in Warehouse 13, Beckett is a kind of Linden Avery figure. Strong female, but not very likeable, especially in comparison to the male leads.

Speaking of Warehouse 13, if you're ok with fun and cheesy sci-fi, my favorite's probably Eureka, which SyFy recently axed. Once you've seen a few episodes, you pretty much know what the mystery/problem is after the first 15 minutes, but the characters carry the show past its usual predictability.

Oh, and I can highly recommend Damages (with Glenn Close).

I watch CSI: Miami on occasion and also Hawaii 5-0, though Police Procedurals don't keep me viewing regularly very long.

so Life on Mars is on netflix instant play and i watched the first 5 episodes last night. it's another one of those shows that seems to get better.
i realize cail said he liked all but the last episode so don't tell me why yet cail, i'll probably finish watching it this week then we can chat about it.

so far, tho, i like it.
i'd kind of like to see the BBC One production as i've seen posters on the innerwebs saying that the american version is shite compared to the BBC version.

and i do have to say that harvey keitel has never been one of my favorite actors. something about him annoys but i can't quite put my finger on what.

speakin of jason o'mara...uh...he's JOE MORELLI???!! and daniel sunjata (the suhweeeeet lookin nurse that Bailey just dumped on Grey's Anatomy) is RANGER!!! i enjoyed the first couple of Evanovich's Stephanie Plum books and this looks like it'll be a fun movie.

oh no! don't get me wrong, he's a really good actor. i fully admit he's good. and in certain roles i've liked him. it's some mannerism or something about his voice...i really can't put my finger on what it is, but i find watching him for any length of time grates on me.

Netflix has it, I'm sending Disc 1 back this morning.

Barney Miller, Moonlighting, Police Squad and Castle are my favorites.

I like many of the ones already mentioned. Castle for the fun of it. My favorite would have to be Bones. Granted, it has its bizarre moments, but overall, I am invested in the characters and the crime scene forensics is fascinating for me. But I grew up on Quincy M.E. ...

And for fun non-realism, Psych, White Collar and The Mentalist are interesting character studies.
