So, I'm driving the work van on the Interstate. My coworker and I have seven consumers with us. I'm in the right lane, and a state trooper is coming up in the left. He pulls even with us, then slows down as we approach one of those u-turns where they usually sit. But he doesn't pull in there. He sits behind me in that lane, then pulls over behind me. After a little bit, he puts the lights on. Now I know I wasn't doing anything. I was only going almost 70 in a 65 zone. So he asks a couple of questions about the van, then asks me to step out. We're standing in front of the van, and he asks where I'm going. I tell him I work with developmentally disabled adults, point at the guys in the van, and say where our work site is, which was just down the road. Then he asks if any of the guys has treatments. I asked if he meant medication, and he says, "This went off", pointing to a red flashing light on his belt. I said, "I don't know what that means." So he tells me it's a radiation detector! And I realized it was because my coworker had his thyroid irradiated on the 1st. I had no idea troopers carried such a device, and we were all amazed it could catch his thyroid done nine days prior while both cars were going 70. He said it was the first time his detector ever went off. "I was saying, 'What's that buzzing?'."
That's a pretty cool story!

But here's what I'm thinking now... When a trooper's radiation detector goes off, they have to fill out a report. So he took my license to his car and wrote it all down. And flash forward to the day when maybe there will be some kind of terrorist threat in NY. And they'll look up records of people connected with radioactivity. And then there's a knock on my door, and it's the SWAT team, Navy Seals, and the radiation police.

That sounds like the beginnings of a novel Fist! And it's NaNoWriMo too! Makes me wonder what other kinds of dectectors law enforcement could have in this story that you're already writing right? Right?

I just started a thread there. This can stay here, in case some are interested, but don't want to fight. Heh

The Radiation Police gave me a ticket once. For speeding.
I had exceeded 186 thousand mph.
But I fought it and got off.
It's amazing what you can do when you go back in time.

I actually got pulled over once for going too slow. My kids have never let me live it down.
I was going *exactly* 65, which was the speed limit. I wanted to pass this big truck but it was hanging out in the right lane, also doing 65. A FL state trooper comes up behind me. After a minute the lights go on, so I pull over. The guy comes up, looking like he's about to have an aneurism. "Do you know why I pulled you over"
"Uh.... no. Was I speeding?"
"NO! You were...uh... going too slow."
"But I was doing the speed limit."
He gave me this speech about how everyone expects you to go a few miles over when you're passing, and I was holding him up, and you could see in his face he knew how incredibly lame he sounded, so I apologized profusely and he let me off with a warning and slunk back to his car.
I still get a laugh out of it, but it was awfully hard explaining the whole sitch to my kids, who were 8 and 12, and whom we had always taught to respect the law, etc.
