I've been teaching about commas this week. Previously, they had been exposed to apostrophes. At this level we just introduce them, we don't expect them to really learn all about them.

Today we were reading a book with commas in it. I asked if anyone could remember what this symbol was called?

"An apostrophe," said "Jimmy".

"It would be an apostrophe, if it was up higher. But when it's down low it's called...?"

"An abomination?"

Can't blame the kid too much,
He recently woke up from a comma.

Being an English teacher myself I have experienced the horrors of the apostrophe ever and anon. It keep's popping up in the most unexpected and least possible place's. In return its alway's missing when its needed.

Even in my own tongue rogue apostrophes spread like a bunch of randy rabbit's in a viagra factory. In German there i's no apostrophe indicating genitive. But for s'ome reason people who open bar's or fashion shop's seem to have a genetic predisposition that makes them ignorant of the'se grammar rule's.

Don't get me started on German comma rules ...
