I Want to Buy Rocks From You!

If you live in the East/Mid East/ South East

I want to buy some rocks from you. :D

I just started knapping arrowheads and things like that, but damn is it expensive to buy rocks from other areas. If you can get your hands on flint or chert for free (or cheap) I'll gladly pay for the shipping to get it to me.

PM me if you can help...thanks!

Not that I can help you, but have you tried to find a knapping association in your area/state/country. They might be able to help you--give you an idea of where to go to get some.

You could also try knapping silcrete (which is what the indigenous people use a lot here) and less expensive (I'm guessing) than, at least, chert.

In the meantime, I'll ask Mr Seareach if he has any suggestions (and he's a member of a whole lot of archaeological associations and might be able to put up a message on one of the messages boards for you).

Well, I assume I can get my hands on some rocks. I wonder how much shipping is. I know where there's flint along the river.

Then again, it might be shale.

Great idea! I found a group called PSK, Puget Sound Knappers. :D :D I don't think they sell stone, but it's going to be great to have brains to pick. Plus they put on classes, mostly free!

I'll take a look at getting some silcrete. I've also been experimenting with glass and johnstone (broken toilet porcelain..haha)

Glass is a great medium to use but, if I remember correctly (and I might be wrong about this, but I think I'm right) it's tricky to use because it fractures so easily. I have a bifacially flaked glass point that a friend made me (he's an exceptionally good knapper--was an archaeology student at the university I went to). I'll try and remember to take a photo of it for you.

A friend of mine is a knapper - he wrote books on it, as well as other geological and archeological things. Bob Patten in Denver. You can get his email address from the bottom of his web page:
