The Washington Post has an article today (excerpted from a book) about the origins of HIV. Here's a link. The authors lay blame, ultimately, on the colonial exploitation of Africa around the turn of the 20th century.

Interesting article. This is more proof why it is highly valuable to study history--so we don't make the same mistakes all over again.

We have a good idea of how: A hunter caught an infected chimpanzee for food, allowing the virus to pass from the chimp’s blood into the hunter’s body, probably through a cut during butchering.
At least any other means of transfer is to gross to contemplate ;-)

I never really got far enough past the Human/chimp imagery to start assigning gender to the participants, no.

Either way, some chimps are very attractive. Just look at Fabio.

Picture googling Fabio yields no chimps, but is dominated by three male H. sapiens of varying degree of hunkyness. I trust that it is one of those that you implicitly refer to as more or less simian?

Uh-huh!

I guess you're right, tho. The chimp and the butcher wouldn't have to be the same gender. My mistake.

So HIV was spread by 2 gay chimps both named Fabio?

Nah, everything would have been just fine if it weren't for the butcher and that little episode with baker, tub, candlestick maker.
