Happy Purim, everyone!

Tonight and tomorrow is the holiday where it is commanded one "celebrates" to the excess so one is unable to tell the difference between the names of Mordechai and Hamen. We read the megillat ester (the book of Esther) with noise makers to drown out whenever Hamen's name is said, and costumes for both adults and children are the rule.

That sounds like a fun holiday!

If I understand what I heard in a class once, the two "rabinnical" festivals, Purim and Hanukkah, are the only two which will still be observed after Moshiach comes. Yes, there are joyous biblical based holidays as well. But those are the only two which will continue.

I don't remember why though...

That is very interesting when you consider that neither of them were one of the festivals ordained by God through Moses for the Israelite community. I never heard that before.

You can find articles and even whole books about how the Messiah is the fulfillment of those ordained festivals, so it makes sense.

No one mentioned Esther, who pretty much kicked butt. Haman's, to be specific. Happy Purim!!

Precisely. Hence the term "rabbinical." They were festivals created by man, not HaShem.

My understanding is when the Ethiopian Jewish community was discovered by the west, the tribes there had never heard of Hanukkah, as they split from the other tribes before the events of Hanukkah occurred. Their methods of separating meat from milk is also very different from the more recognized rabbinical "fences around fences" methods.

I do not know if they celebrated Purim though.
