I hate Excel. So much... I particularly hate how necessary it is... soooo much...

That's one of the many, many, spread sheets I have had to do. This is a simple one.

My favorite trick is when people use Excel for a simple chart -- say, for a table of contents -- because the little boxes are already there, so they don't have to play around with alignment. They do this even when there are no number values in their material to speak of. Learn Tables in Word, fer godsakes....

My favorite thing (not!) about Excel is when one of my attorneys sends me a spreadsheet she's received from a client and says, "Please print." More often than not, the spreadsheet has not been optimized for printing, so I have to go in and tweak the hell out of it so it will be at least minimally legible on paper. And my most favorite thing is that when you tweak one sheet, the tweaks don't carry over onto the other sheets of the workbook. So I have to format and print each sheet individually.

This is why they pay me the big bucks.

Why, why, would you ever want to print a spread sheet?! Lawyers are a bunch of sadists.

Indeed they are.

Some people are still married to paper. I don't get it myself.

Excel ... use it everyday. I loved it when they expanded it to 1 million rows. And then I hated it when I found out that all that data bogs down Excel to where its almost useless. I had to learn how to write better formulas due to the amount of data. I have to say though, Excel can just about do anything.

Excel is really great when I am doing another one of my minor mathematical research projects such as figuring out the stable points of y = k - cosh(x) when k > 1; those points will be the roots of the equation y = k - x- cosh(x). To find those, I use Newton's Method and Excel really makes it easy to set it up.

I had no idea I had a million rows! Now I can get a whole marriage index on one sheet instead of having to split it A-L and M-Z. Magic! :) :) :)

Word - the fundamental unit of our work currency.

Acrobat - a fancy electronic lamination machine for Word documents.

Excel - the fastest way for my company to pretend that it has control over a process, or for the math-savvy to manipulate reality to get projects approved.

Powerpoint - required to translate Excel into the pretty colors, bullets, and 7-word bang-boxes that managers can understand.

MS Project - What we give to the PMs to keep them super-busy, so they will leave us alone to actually get our jobs done.

Outlook - simultaneously the backbone of our entire enterprise, and the largest time-portal-to-nothing ever created.

I hate it when people use Excel as an actual spreadsheet, for financial reports, but don't use the functions and instead do the calculations manually.

What's the point, folks?

If you are going to just type in numbers and add them up yourself, you may as well just use a table in MS Word!!
