What happens to my Blog?

Post by peter »

A few weeks a go I started a 'blog' just so I could get some stuff of my chest about the way things are going in the UK etc, and just got to wondering. What actually happens to a blog (or anything else really) once you post it out into the world. I mean is it going to stay 'there' forever (wherever 'there' is) or at some unspecified future time is somebody going to say "Well no one has looked at this for three decades - fling it into the trash to make a bit of space for some new stuff." Is that how it works, or am I 'out there for ever' till the end of time (or Google goes bankrupt, whichever happens first) Nb I assume Google is where 'there' is seeing as they opperate the blogging site where my musings find their voice. ( jhfv.blogspot.co.uk/ just in case I can tempt anyone  )

It'll just stay on the servers until either you delete it, some problem causes it to be lost, or the servers shut down.

Who/what are 'the servers' - they sound a bit like 'The Watchers' (aka The Gregori) who fell from grace and gave rise to the Nephilim in days of yore :D

(by the way - how was your trip Murrin. Did you get up near Banf at all - I'm going up into the Rockies in a few months time.)

The web server that all the web pages and data are saved on.

As for the trip, I was only staying in Toronto, plus one day trip to Niagara. Was pretty good, but didn't see much outside of the city.

Is this where I plug my own blog (link in sig!)?

Absolutely - Murrin, Absolutely  .

Still don't get it though. All that data must require storage, and storage has to cost. Who pays and why? Surely there must be a limit to how much they are going to want to store. And over the years the storage is going to get stuffed to capacity with crap like my blog ( ;) ) that no-one is going to look at from one year to the next. They're going to be payin shed loads to keep stuff that no-one is, or is ever going to be interested in. Naaah! There has to be more to it than that. Also who are these servers - are they names I would recognise - Yahoo, Microsoft, Google etc - or someone else altogether. And if there are a limited number of 'places where all this data is stored isn't it going to become a major draw for terrorist attack where damage to the main data storage sites could be disruptive in the most extreme way.

Well, in this case, it's Google. They have huge, massive, enormous amounts of storage capacity at their server farms, and it's all funded the way their whole company is - advertising revenue.

I think the fact that people (in general) put things on the internet without any knowledge about where those things go and how long they stay there is highly problematic.

You mean, like the Watch? ;)

It's always kind of entertaining (in a sick sort of way) to watch a teenager who posts a rant somewhere online, and then gets all p.o.'d when the wrong person (a parent or the person they were ranting about) reads it. Hellooo, unless you password protect it, anybody can read it. And even with password protection you're not 100% in the clear. (Not that any of my kids did that or anything...)

In addition, don't forget the bots who crawl the web, save your words and post them somewhere else.

Imagine my surprise when I googled an email address of mine and found posts from a Google Groups discussion archived on third party sites. I can delete my posts in Google Groups, if I want, but I have no control over those third party sites. My words are up there forever. :P

Or until, you know, they have a server crash or a hack or something like that. ;)

No such thing, really, as privacy on the intarwebz.

I posted a one-off blog page several years ago: www.sinusinfectioncure.blogspot.com. Haven't touched it since, and it's still there, unchanged. I wanted to share the information, that's all, so I don't care if it's reposted.

Yeah, I gave up trying to hide my tracks on the internet a long time ago. Even if you have never touched a computer, your name is likely searchable somewhere.

Though I do try to keep my forum persona separate from my RL. ;)

With varying degrees of success, I might add, especially after I friended a bunch of youse guys on FB and G+. :P

Just don't blow my cover. ;)
