Today I took a bag of trash to the dumpster for my Mom. There on top of the dumpster was an old, black handbag. I was curious and poked around inside. There was some rubbish, and a 14K gold figaro chain, from Italy. Score!!

I'm no stranger to dumpster diving; if you live near a large university when school gets out, you could furnish an apartment and clothe a family, and there were times when I was not above that. (I guess I'm still not!)

What are some lucky finds you've had?

My mom once found a whole set of dishes thrown in the trash outside my aunt's apartment building. She took them home and used them. For years, actually.

I once found a ring under a mountain after talking to some kind of amphibian weirdo. And guess what, the ring makes you invisible. I better see a wizard about it.

I once found a complete set of Planet of the Apes VHS tapes, unopened and in the original packaging sitting on top of an open garbage can sitting by the curb.
I know its like finding an unopened, unused 8-Track tape of Led Zeppelin II but it was neat to find in any case.

Funny. The other day I bought a complete set of Planet of the Apes in VHS. My favorite movies of all time, in my favorite video format. But as I was walking home, I set them on top of a trash can while I bent to tie my shoe. When I stood up, they were gone!

So what I am saying is ... your a lucky guy!

I did the same, but in my case the VHS was still there but the trash can was gone.

Not a trash finding, but it lurked in a rather...unexpected place. Discovered in a teeny tiny poky bookstore in Budapest last autumn.
