Luke: What do you mean, R2 can fly?

How many scrapes would R2 have gotten out of or not gotten into in the first place if he had used his flight capabilities in the first trilogy? How many different ways would Luke have been able to use that wonderful power if he had but known that R2 was hiding that secret?
How about if in A New Hope, he flew to Obi-Wan's place instead of wandering through JAWA COUNTRY. Maybe he can't fly very far. Maybe he's keeping a secret so he can suprise people with it. Maybe R2 is a jerk.

He probably cannot fly far, and it probably uses up most of his power. Maybe if you were stuck listening to C-3PO's insessant whining for 40+ years, you'd be a little testy as well.

R2 clearly showed a willingness to use his power in Clones. We've seen him in far more urgent situations before where using a tenth of the flight he used in Clones would have been necessary. What is up with that?
I agree about 3PO though. "Shut him up or shut him down!"

He was 25-30 years older then. Perhaps that option was removed from him. By "him", I of course refer to the lifeless, genderless automaton known to us as R2-D2.

I thought of that as well. Perhaps he'll have it removed for him by Anakin in the last movie.

So, as an truly evil act, Anakin decide to stop R2-D2 from flying? Yes...Of..Course.....lol

That would explain why in the "later" films R2 doesn't employ his thrusters, even if it would have drasticly helped the situation.

I personally think it's just another cock up by Lucas.

In all candor, it most certainly is. He's just thought up some nifty new things and doesn't care what it does to the continuity. I'm the only one who noticed anyway. :-)

Gene Roddenberry. Creator of Star Trek. I know you don't watch so you probably don't know.
