SRD announcement on Last Dark, and forum

Post by Borillar »

I just saw this on stephendonaldson.com:
I have now completed the first rewrite for "The Last Dark." At this stage, the text is 1026 pages (not counting "What Has Gone Before" and the Glossary). As usual, the next step is that my agent will read the book and decide whether it's good enough to show to my editors. Assuming it is (and I do assume that), I'll start on the second rewrite as soon as I hear from my editors--which won't be any sooner than a month from now. This first rewrite took longer than I wanted it to. Nevertheless we're still on track for publication in the fall of 2013.
Does that warrant the opening up of the "Last Dark" forum, or does that only happen once the book is out?

Based on prior practice, there will be a hidden forum, accessible by asking the mod(s) for access, for the new book. This will be created well before the book comes out, but kept hidden until after the book's release. This protects the spoiler-averse from both speculation and any revelations by ARC buyers.

Since we are over a year from the release date, it is still a bit early. Patience, padawan! :)

Agree with SD. We'll open the TLD forum when ARCs become available, or a first chapter preview is released on SRD's website, whichever comes first.

And for those more in the know, is there any sense as to when the ARC might become available?

Srd has only recently announced completion of the 2nd re-write of TLD.
He usually does 3 re-writes before he's satisfied.

I would guess we'll see ARCs summer 2013.

Repost from a Facebook post by Matt Yenkala. I thought it appropriate for this thread. :-)

Six months.
Not a word on the website of how things are coming along. No news on anything in six months actually; no appearances or new interviews.

I've noticed that. It's very unusual, based on the patterns we've observed over the years. I'm a little worried.

I'll start panicking if we do not hear anything by the end of the month.

No need to panic. Just start spamming Romeo with PMs asking him to update the site with some news himself, if SRD doesn't have the time or inclination at the moment. ;)

Whelp, just under twelve hours before I start panicking and spreading rumours about how the publishers want Donaldson to change the ending to which he responded, "Never!" and they are now in one of those metaphorical Mexican stand-offs.

It's clear the manuscript(s) have all been lost before they could be uploaded! And Donaldson does not have the heart to start writing the novel all over again.

There have been reports there is one surviving manuscript in Australia, where it is being held hostage by some lady making outrageous demands for its safe deliverance. Each day her demands go unmet, she tears out a few words and sends them to dlb.
