There's a novel called Zugzwang, by Ronan Bennett, whom I rather like. (Havoc, in its Third Year and The Catastrophist in particular.)
Anyway, I remember looking zugzwang up when I was reading the book.

A zugzwang may be far from pleasant in the process and sometimes in the immediate results, but looking back may be fun)
Actually, that's something SRD's works are full of) How many times the poor characters arrived into those? And look at the results))
