Beyond HDTV -- 4K

Post by Zarathustra »

link

It was bound to happen. So many people have bought HDTVs that sales have begun to slip, and manufacturers need The Next Big Thing to drive up sales again. 3D was flop. I predict this one will be, too.

The only reason to have ultra-HD is if you need a massive set. Higher resolution only is necessary for larger sizes that spread the HD picture across a space large enough for picture quality to suffer, or rather, for an increase in picture quality to be noticeable. As I've pointed out before, the human eye can only resolve so much detail. At about 11 feet, the human eye can't distinguish 720p from 1080p on a 50" set. It only becomes noticeable on a larger set, or a closer distance.

But many homes can't take advantage of it; you don't want to sit right on top of an 84 inch set. You need to be sitting back pretty far. Which means you need a large home theater, and hence a large home. I really don't see much of a market for this. But then again, I'm still happy with my 50" 720p. I do think about upgrading to 1080 now that prices have dropped so much since 2008 when I bought it. But beyond that, I can't imagine having a need for ultra-HD.

Anyone else?

I have a 46" 1080p TV, that I am very happy with. I am wholly unimpressed by 3D, whether it is at home, or in the movie theater. At the movies, I have paid more for 3D, and felt robbed. After ~15 minutes, I tend to forget that I'm watching in 3D anyway...unless the movie sucks, at which point I'm simply regretting the movie ticket cost.

Anything larger, and I would need to knock out a wall in my home to allow a proper viewing area for it. And I suck at DIY, so I'm good with what I got.

Considering my HDTV is 21" and I'm considering upgrading to 32"....

Some people will fall for the better resolution just because it's The New Hotness. Top of the line, baby! They can feel free to waste their money, imho.

And I agree about 3D.

I got one of the last generation Panasonic 3D plasmas after we moved. I'll never use the 3D. 50" at 12 feet seems about optimal. It's definitely a step up on the 1080P TV I have in the basement.

At 44 years old though, I know that my vision will never be able to appreciate higher definition than I currently have.

Age matters more for hearing than eyesight, doesn't it? Unless you've got macular degeneration, or something, corrective lenses should keep you up with the latest technology.

Like I said above, you'd certainly notice the difference if you bought a much larger TV.

How is your latest TV a step up Cail? Better color, contrast, black levels, etc.? Also, I'm curious about your 3D experience ... do you have a 3d Blu-ray player? Have you tried it out and didn't like it, or just no interest?

Damn, I just saw the brand new 60" 1080p Panasonic plasma at Walmart for less than $1000. Unbelievable. The thing looks freakin' huge, but weighs the same as my current one (in other words, my current stand would work). So it must be considerably thinner.

So tempting...

The newer Panis have great contrast and black levels. And there's just something about how it produces depth that's far superior to my older set. I've never tried the 3D mode (don't care to either, as I find it mildly distracting/annoying), but I'm thinking there's some sort of 2D upconversion going on. HD and Blu-rays, even older ones, look far better than they ever have.

My 32" HDTV (not sure 720 or 1080) is fine for me. We watch so little TV (only have basic cable) and almost no movies, and life is great.

LOL, Cyb. Good for you. I grew up in the woods without electricity or running water, so I'm probably making up for my childhood techno-void. Probably some deep-seated psychological disorder. Take that, mom and dad! Plasma HDTV!!

Honestly, I don't watch much, either. No more than an hour a night. Sometimes less. Getting rid of cable--especially cable news--was one of the best decisions we ever made. With Netflicks/Hulu Plus (total of $16/month), we get lots of TV shows that we've been slowly working our way through. Right now it's Office reruns. Over the summer it was Next Generation. I do love a good blu-ray movie, but there really aren't very many good movies. Much of my home theater upgrades were driven entirely by Lord of the Rings. That's when we got our first DVD player, and it just escalated after that.

Well done dukka.

I should clarify, I stay away from TV b/c I know its addicting, there are good shows that I know I would be interested in sticking with. If I got a better TV, I'd only have a reason to indulge. Yet, I'm still tempted when I see sales...

It's funny, we finally got DirecTV so I could watch Ravens games (I'm equidistant from DC and Baltimore, and I'm stuck with DC stations), and we rarely turn the thing on. We DVR the shows we like, we Netflix quite a bit. The only time I watch live TV (other than sports) is the news when I work out, and that's on an old 19" piece of crap.

Don't forget the bigger the TV the more juice it draws and the more expensive it is to power. I'm still using the 25" TV I bought back in 1994. It works quite well.

I have never owner a TV.

OK. I've always lived in a house with one, I've just never owned or bought one. My parents had one, roommates, live-in girlfriends etc. Any time I lived alone, I didn't have one.

My wife had one when I married her. It's square and heavy. We use it to watch movies.

I wouldn't mind having a larger TV. I could buy any TV I wanted today, no problem. It's just not important to me. TV steals my time.

I find that there's not really enough quality content for it to steal much of my time. I don't watch commercials. Don't watch news. Don't watch anything except what I really want to see. And when that's the case, I want it to look (and sound) as good as possible.

I find the Internet to be a much bigger time-thief than TV.

Ah yes, some people have a very hard time staying focused while online. The TV steals your time in blocks. The internet will steal your time in littles and in blocks. Five min off track here, eight min off track there etc, etc. In the past, I've battled with that a little myself. Now I am productive the vast majority of the time I am online. I seldom watch youtube and such- not even weekly. And I have to have internet for my work.

I know what you mean...if I sit down to watch a movie, that's two hours gone. I'd rather read or play a game. (Which sucks just as much time of course. Or even more. )

I don't own a TV set of any sort. *shrug* I don't miss it at all. Even when I had one and all the cable channels to go with it I didn't watch most of them so I was throwing money away each month.
The Tank is gone and now so am I.
