I've Got a Bad Feeling About This

Disney just purchased Lucasfilm for $4 billion, which will also include the rights to the Indiana Jones franchise as well as LucasFilm, Ltd, LucasArts, ILM, and Skywalker Sound.

Wait for it....

...wait for it....

Disney wrote:The last Star Wars movie release was 2005’s Revenge Of The Sith – and we believe there’s substantial pent-up demand.
Star Wars Episode 7 is slated for release in 2015.

No, I am not making this up.

I cannot blame Mr. Lucas for wanting to cash out and be able to enjoy his retirement in luxurious style, but Disney has a history of ruining everything they touch. The Star Wars franchise had already suffered enough with Episode I and the digital retcons (which are officially canon, by the way); this will simply make it worse.

Heh, already posted down in the SW&ST forum.

No big deal for me. My son'll love more movies.

Disney getting ILM is HUGE.

Depends who is involved in the films, really. Could be an awful cash in... or could benefit from having Lucas in a purely creative-consultant role and not actually writing or directing the thing.

This doesn't convince me that you're not making this up. That was my first thought, and I'm sticking with it until I'm sitting in a theater watching the next movie.

So, if Disney screws up enough for the film not to come out, you're going to say Hashi made it up? ;)

Looks somewhat suspicious, but still may turn out well - and even if it turns out terrible - it's going to be an event in any case.

Where I get concerned is where they not only say they're doing the sequel trilogy, but also plan to release a new film every 1-2 years after that for as long as they can keep milking it.

I'd rather gamble on the possibility of a new and improved Star Wars film franchise with Disney than living with the unshakable edict "I'm not making any more Star Wars films!"

Its not a lock tight guarantee that Disney will make crappy, shallow Star Wars movies so I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt until I get more info.

I don't browse that forum. In fact, I don't browse the vast majority of forums here--I am pretty local and am familiar with maybe 30 or 40 other users, at most.

Disney will milk Star Wars for as long as they can, meaning they will probably make that $4 billion back over the next 20 years. hrm....time to buy Disney stock, I see.

Disney needs ILM because Pixar will probably break off as quickly as they can. Besides, a lot of movies get their effects through ILM or from technology/processes developed by ILM.

Lucas is donating most of his $4 billion to education charity.

Well, I wasn't concerned about him going back on his word anyway, it's not like he promised to do something unquestionably good - maybe Disney is going to fail at this - but maybe not, and I'd rather see a chance taken, who knows. I've seen more scary attempts turn out well. And even if not, at least it will be a reminder of what did go well.
