2001: A Space Odyssey. Are you confused or did you get it?

2001 is in my estimation one of the great science fiction films of all time. One of the problems I have sharing this bit of wisdom is that I've had a hard time convincing some people that I really know what happens at the end. Stanley Kubrick used some rather distracting images in the final few moments of the film to depict David Bowman's descent into the realm of the aliens. It is kind of tough to follow (and some say its hard to stay awake) that final segments if you have little or no background in science fiction or abstract story telling. My 12 year old daughter had a particularly hard time with the different versions of Bowman as he would first appear as himself in his space suit and then watch an older version of himself eating a meal and then from there watch an even older version. The film itself is crammed with special effects that were truly amazing for 1968. I still stare in wonder to this day at Kubrick's achievement with this film.

I've watched it maybe 6 times--it's very relaxing. And while I think I get it, u have to remember that my Mom took me and my best friend 2 NYC to see the premier in Greenwich Village when I was 12. I think we were the only 3 people there w/o joints in our mouths! So if I'm actually
still confused that's why!

Holy cow. The premier! Since it debuted in 1968 I was only 4 at the time. I missed it.

I'm not sure that Bowman was descending to alienhood so much as ascending to a godhood of sorts. Did you read the book? It will certainly clear up the final scenes, and you can nap between chapters if it makes you so sleepy.

I did read the book and his state of being may have been altered but I was refering to his destination (if you can call it that) He was being translated to another plane so to speak.

Hey Shatterstar, didn't you die? Shot yourself in the head with your own laser, then crashed into a brick wall? That must have hurt....

I have this movie on VHS and I will say that I like it - but I always skip the monkey scene at the beginning (that is one of the worst openings of any movie ever!) and I always skip the psychodelic montage at the end. Everything in the middle is really cool.
Love 2010!
Anyone read 2063? or 3001?

Do you mean 2061? I think I read that one.

I was thinking it was 2063 - but no matter. Yeah, that's the one I mean. Pretty good book. 3001 was too wierd.

I didn't know there was a 3001. Weird or not I have to read it.

Have you read the other 3 books?

I have 2001 & 2061. I never bothered to read 2010 and since there isnt a 3001 film to allow me to be lazy, I have to read that.
