Okay. Love him or hate him, Godzilla is a science fiction Icon of the most powerful sort. I grew up watching the absolute worst he had to offer (and occasionally the best :-) )
I can also claim that I've actually watched not one but three Godzilla films at the theater.
Godzilla vs. Megalon
Godzilla 1985
and
Godzilla (The American version)

I know Godzilla is childish. I know "the guy in the rubber suit" stuff. I struggle watching most of the films they stink so much. But.....
He's cool.

The orginal film is a classic and fairly well done for the time. The Raymond Burr scenes edited in for the American audience are obvious but do add to the film. IMHO.
When I was a kid Monster Island was so cool. The battles between Godzilla, Rodan and King Ghidrah are legendary.

For the record I wish the American Godzilla had been called something else. It never for a moment felt, looked or acted like Godzilla but thats another topic.

Love the big green guy...Hated it when he and King Kong fought and basically it was draw. Godzilla should have been able to step on King Kong as he was much bigger!

Loved Godzilla Vs. The Smog Monster.

Brinn, I also noted the continuity issue with King Kong. I think I heard once that KK was about 40 feet tall. Since Godzilla seems to roam around the tops of sky scrapers.....Hmmmm.....
I heard that the last couple of Japanese Godzilla movies were pretty cool. Decent special effects and so on. I haven't seen them but I hope to.

The only other monster I really look forward to seeing is King Ghidorah. So neat with the lightning.

I read, somewhere, that there were two versions of the ending. The American ending where King Kong won, and the Japanese ending where Godzilla kicked butt.

I hadn't heard that. I wonder if both versions are available. :-)

That was one of the problems I had. I was hoping for a serious treatment of the character as they did in the original film. Instead it was tongue in cheek. I never for a moment worried about the well being of any of the characters. There was no suspense. It was just a big expensive hoot. It reminded me of watching the NFL pro bowl. You simply can't take the game seriously because everyone is joking, standing around with Hawaiian shirts, barely paying attention to what is going on. Don’t get me wrong, I kind of like the American Godzilla. I just wish they had titled it “Big Monster Does New York” and saved the big budget treatment of Godzilla for a more serious effort. :-)

I personally enjoyed the opener for Godzilla:1984 the best. It was titled Godzilla vs. Bambi. Heh.

Short and very sweet. I've used that film as a comparison many times.
Like take a fight between Superman and Batman for example....

Thats Bull***t and you know it. How would someone with super speed have time to be effected by anything like that? He would have deboned BW in a microsecond. Nevermind the freaking rock would have had to travel A.) in the right direction for who knows how far without being knocked off course by the billions of things between here and where Krypton had been and B) Said rock would have had to have traveled at or above the speed of light to even reach earth in a trillion years.

Wait a second.

I forgot this is all fiction.

As a kid I enjoyed the Saturday Afternoon Matinees on Tee-vee with the numerous Godzilla movies. But I got a kick outta that giant Turtle ( :x what's it's name???) that flew around and had big ole' choppers.
The Godzilla movies I didn't like were the one with Mothra (the two tiny Japanese girls singing that stupid song and that interpreter dude with the bulging eyes...(or was that with King Kong??)... And the other one with that Baby Godzilla who puffed out smoke rings instead of blasts of radioactive FIRE!

Geez... anything for a buck huh?

Upon further review....... I see from a couple of websites that there is a different ending in the Japanese and American versions, but Godzilla doesn't win.... It's a draw. The last thing heard in the Japanese version is Godzilla's roar - meaning King Kong didn't kill him. :)
