Today saw the release of the once-a-decade Granta list of 20 (British) novelists under 40 to look out for, which has often picked out writers who've gone on to be big names in literary fiction. Damien Walter, at the Guardian, decided to answer this literary fiction focus with his own list of 20 young (international) writers in SF/F genre fiction.

Click here to see his list.

I think it's a decent list - I've only read a few, but a lot of the others are familiar names, ones I have every intention of reading. He manages to cover a big range of styles. What do you think of the names he's picked out?

Hey, there's a South African on that list, and I've never even heard of her.

Well. Been a fan of MiƩville for a couple of years now; almost through with Howie's Wool, which reads as one of the better YA novels I've stumbled upon as of late.

Just wish these article authors would not spatter Finnish names with typos. Second time within the very week: Hannu Rajaniemi, not Rajeniemi.
Joe Hill is arguably the most significant horror author of the last decade, with 20th Century Ghosts, Heart Shaped Box and the upcoming NOS4A2 setting the bar for the entire genre.
Is this person a devoted fan of Buzz Lightyear of Star Command?

Interesting list, nonetheless, and more titles to add to my already teetering to-read piles.

Not a bad list. Howey and Mieville were obvious choices. I'm not a big fan of Seanan McGuire -- her urban fantasy series seems bleak and unrelenting to me.

Her latest book just came out in South Africa, maybe you could check it out. (It's not out elsewhere yet.)

I think I shall do that. I'm about to start another round of book ordering...I'll add her to the list.
