The Great Gatsby 3D

Having a Leonardo Dicaprio weekend what with seeing Django Unchained last night and The Great Gatsby this afternoon.

Lavish, sumptuous, rich but somewhat hollow at the centre was my feeling (not unlike the charachters in the film ) but it just looked so good it you could forgive it almost anything. Dicaprio and McGuire slipped into their roles pretty effortlessly and the rest of the cast were servicable as well. I've not read the novel so can't say how closely the 'feel' is captured but I'd guess it's pretty close. All in all a good couple of hours of viewing which flags just briefly in the latter stages. Worth your bucks if you like Luherman and pretty good anyway.

Do you feel the 3D is a vital component of the film?

No Menolly, not vital. The 3D was unobtrusive and well done enough to be worthwhile up to a point - but I certainly would not feel that the cinematic experiece would be significantly dented by seeing it in 2D. The film is good enough on it's own to stand up without it. Think 'Moulan Rouge' or 'Romeo & Juliet' in terms of oppulence and you about have it.
