1. Leslie Feist: she's a Canadian singer songwriter guitarist.. she's pretty badass. if I was to recommend a song showing her skills as a singer and guitar player id say "anti-pioneer"
2. Corinne Bailey Rae: another really good singer she's got a cool style if you wanna listen to a tune try "Put your records on" a very fun song.
3. Nerina Pallot song the song Idaho on the show live at abbey road and hearing that was enough to make me put her on this list.
4. Lisa hannigan, she sings with Damien rice and does a lot of solo work.

I have a hard time deciding, cuz I keep wanting to separate what I think are great voices in more objective ways and those great in affective [for lack of better term in my head at the moment] ways...though it's difficult to keep the difference "pure," anyway.
Plus, just so damn many choices!

While there are many in this list I agree with (Cass Elliot, Grace Slick, Joni Mitchell, Ann Wilson, Karen Carpenter and others) I have to salute Cail for mentioning Rindy Ross.
The late-night in the fall of 1979 is is still crystal clear in my mind when I was in a dive bar in Bellingham WA and Seafood Mama (which became Quarterflash in a few years) took the stage and tried out what they said was a new song they had recently written.
Harden My Heart live for the first time was an apotheosis...absolutely incredible! I have listened to a lot of live music in the decades since and few songs (perhaps Al Stewart's "I told you so" playing of Nostradamus in Redwood City, CA in the days after the Berlin Wall fell) have affected me that strongly.
