We've had one of the mildest winters I can remember. Yesterday was the first day with frost on the ground in the morning.

Lorin, I set out to come shovel you out, cuz we only have a measly 18" or so of snow on the ground.
Unfortunately the 50 degrees below zero temperature froze me to the front steps and they had to break me off at the ankles and lay me on the fire while tourniquetting lower limbs at the ankle.

Buy some skis and bring me painkillers.

Day 8

Woke up to 6 more inches over night. I went out last night and built a snowman. Put my scarf around him to keep him warm. Went inside to get a carrot for his nose only to find my black furry companion dug a hold in his head. Found the tattered remains of my scarf at the door step. Not sure if this is a warning from her that the food is running low. Or was it jealousy? Woke up this morning to find her licking my toe? Should I be concerned?

Do you want to build a snowman?
The snow glows white on the mountain tonight
Not a footprint to be seen
A kingdom of isolation
And it looks like I'm the queen

The wind is howling like this swirling storm inside
Couldn't keep it in, Heaven knows I tried

Don't let them in, don't let them see
Be the good girl you always have to be
Conceal, don't feel, don't let them know
Well, now they know

Let it go, let it go
Can't hold it back anymore
Let it go, let it go
Turn away and slam the door
I don't care what they're going to say
Let the storm rage on
The cold never bothered me anyway

It's funny how some distance makes everything seem small
And the fears that once controlled me can't get to me at all
It's time to see what I can do
To test the limits and break through
No right, no wrong, no rules for me
I'm free

Let it go, let it go
I'm one with the wind and sky
Let it go, let it go
You'll never see me cry
Here I stand and here I'll stay
Let the storm rage on

My power flurries through the air into the ground
My soul is spiraling in frozen fractals all around
And one thought crystallizes like an icy blast
I'm never going back, the past is in the past

Let it go, let it go
And I'll rise like the break of dawn
Let it go, let it go
That perfect girl is gone
Here I stand in the light of day
Let the storm rage on
The cold never bothered me anyway

Day 9

Hope is a tease. Temperatures rose to 38 today. Snow began to melt, skies were blue. But too little, too late. Temps dipped to the 20's last night and froze a new crust. Madwoman can't walk on 3 foot snow with a crust.

Food running low. May be forced to consume 2 year old frozen weight watchers dinners. Or worse......WHOLE WHEAT PASTA! The horror.

No more snowmen construction. I think it brings out the animal in the dog. Helldog has taken to chewing on her toes. (at least they aren't my toes).

Snow expected today.

Where can accurate info on winter snowfalls and temperatures be found? Not NY State in general, but as local as I can get. I don't remember a winter as cold as this one, and not many with this snow. It would be interesting to know.

Dam-sel and I were introduced to peppermint schnapps in hot chocolate by our NASA colleagues almost thirty years ago...but we discovered that cinnamon schnapps were even a more warming alternative for that application when we were spending lots of frigid Sundays at what was then called Qwest Field a few years back. Worked great for keeping us in good loud voice too!

We had some snow in Lincolnshire last week! Monday, as it was just before someone arrived with some DVDs on sale or return for me to take to London. One minute it was raining, then when I looked up again it was big snow - but it didn't settle, too wet, and it didn't last long. All we have had since is rain, rain, rain and wind, wind, wind. Oh, at the moment the sky is blue and the sun is shining! :D

I hate winter and snow, nothing will change that. HOWEVER, there are moments once in a while, and one this morning that my wife had never seen.

With just the right sun angle, just the right breeze, just the right temp and humidity, and just the right pace of falling, and you in the right shadow, you are afloat in a globe of calm light filled with swirling bright sparks of fairie-dust.

I always forget about it till the next time I see it.

My wife tried to get a shot as soon as I made her look, but the airborne glitterfest doesn't show. It just looks like common "look, I have snow outside."
