Name the flick that had, for you, the saddest story.
A couple that come to mind for me include On The Beach and Miracle Mile.
What are yours?

Oooh forgot to add Requiem for a Dream!

Sophie's Choice and Of Mice and Men.

Oh yeah my wife has mentioned Sophie's Choice, I haven't seen it yet but do intend to. Dunno anything about Of Mice And Men but for hearing of the title.
Another one with a stellar drop in inspiration at the end is Das Boot.
A little known kiwi film that also fits the bill is Brothers. An aussie flick, well-regarded, that has a pretty shocking sudden turn of events right near the end, is Careful He Might Hear You. Great film.
Ahh just thought of another beauty. Kiwi flick Bad Blood refreshing, exhilarating and utterly depressing! Look for this one, even the theme music will turn your smile into a frown.

Yeah, I agree, Landwaster. Miracle Mile is depressing. Good film, though.

Yeah its one of my favourites. You do have tackle that tack in storylines sometimes.

True. I also think Invasion of the Body Snatchers (the 70s remake) is depressing because
humanity loses in the end, and the scene at the end where Sutherland screeches is really really creepy.

Yeah I've seen that (have a dub off TV somewhere), and remember it not finishing too heartily, but can't remember the details.
It might be time for another viewing
Lord of the Flies (only seen American version) was very depressing, anything involving that chubby boy, especially "Don't you understand, I can't see" and then the dropping of the rock.

I was profoundly moved after watch Saving Private Ryan the first and only time.

Yeah that's not exactly uplifting. It also reminds me of Gallipoli, which of course doesn't end all that crash-hot!

After watching Ryan I went to bed feeling as though I'd witnessed a murder. I actually couldn't sleep for hours. I kept thinking about which kind of person I would be in that situation. A guy that gets grusomely wasted on the beach. A take charge get through it kind of guy or would I lock up completely and assume a fetal possition like the one character. Ugh.

That was a brilliant but very depressing movie...I have worked in a Veteran's Hospital nearly all of my adult life, and it did help me understand the sorts of things our patients went through, though...

This also brings to mind Apocalypse Now, which has no trace of lightness about it.

Was just reminded of another; In The Mouth Of Madness

Yeah, Requiem for a Dream gets top honors in this category. If you're into anime, Grave of the Fireflies is right up there, too. Hmm... what else... Things to do in Denver When You're Dead, Leaving Las Vegas, 12 Monkeys, Dead Man, Se7en, 8 mm, On the Beach, American History X... I know I'm missing one, but...

Se7en and American History X definitely, and I've always been a fan of On The Beach!
Another is The Navigator (another kiwi flick)
