How many movies were so impressive that you not only have or want to have that movie for your collection, but you even have or would like to have the shoddy attempt at redoing it that came out later ... or the cheesy Astaire version that it was built off?

I have two that I can remember immediately :
Cape Fear - both old and new are frighteningly vivid, even though I haven't watched either for a few years now. I have an ex-rental of the De Niro one, and a dub off video of the old one with Peck and Mitchum.

Inherit The Wind - The original with Spencer Tracy is by far the best, and the one done in the late 80s pretty bad by comparison, but the storyline and process of the court case is so encapsulating that I have aan ex-rental of the old one, and a dub off a video of the new one.

Robbery Under Arms - Aussie movie that is such a cool swashbuckle (Sam Neill version) that I was only too happy to buy a sellthrough of the old version as well, sight unseen. Very unremarkable, the old one, but I'll take it!

The only I can think of is Sabrina...the new one just doesn't have Audrey Hepburn's charm...but I still watched it anyway...

The Day Of The Jackal
Nooooooo! That film was such a disappointment after reading the book. There's too much left to chance in the film, the Jackal's calculating genius is neglected.

8O Read the book! The first half isn't that exciting, it's all preparation and watching him set up his various plans. But in the second half you see it all unfold... 8) The screen Jackal might as well have been trying to kill De Gaulle by throwing cobblestones for all the relative finesse he displayed
