Outlander

Although the official premier date of the adaptation of Diana Galbadon's Outlander is August 9th, STARZ has made the first episode available via On Demand (supposedly without a STARZ subscription, but Xfinity is only showing it via subscription when I try to watch it) and at starz.com/outlander.

I loved it. It's been a while since I read the first novel, so I am not missing whatever was left out. I admit I always pictured Jamie's hair to be a more vibrant red, but otherwise I have no complaints so far.

The marketing ploy definitely worked on me; I really wish to have a STARZ subscription to continue watching. But, I'll wait for other means to see it in time.

I watched it On Demand, based on your post. It wasn't bad. My wife liked it, which is cool because she doesn't like fantasy. Halfway through, I said, "You can clearly tell this was written by a woman," and she said, "That must be why I like it!" There's no ... um ... testosterone to it. The woman lead character is the most manly of all the characters. [She even pushed her husband down to give her oral pleasure!] And it's a romance story dressed up as fantasy. Not really my kind of thing, but I might give it a chance to see if there is more beyond the love triangle.

So far, I don't get any sense of conflict for the main character besides the "will she or won't she" question of cheating on her husband with the dreamy wounded soldier ... a question clearly telegraphed by her boring tour-guide-historian-husband who says he'd be cool with it if she had (see what I mean about it obviously being written by a woman? Guys don't typically give their wives this kind of excuse to get it on with Mr. Dreamy).

Testosterone will come, if they don't cut all those parts out...

If anyone else is watching, the trailer promoting the second half of season one is now up.

I'd probably watch it if I had Starz. But I may be getting over my Gabaldon phase. I haven't even read the most recent book in the series yet. :(

I have no idea how long this will last, but Xfinity On Demand here in the Seattle area is doing a Starz free preview. Among the offerings under Starz Originals is all eight episodes of Outlander. For those who haven't had a chance to see it, now may be an opportunity.

Is anyone watching season 2? Not having Starz, for now I have to make die with Facebook posts regarding it. So far, season 2 sounds very opulent.

So, I have yet to see season 2, but Gabaldon has posted on FB after yesterday's season finale that a major change was done. She posted an excerpt from Dragonfly in Amber to show those who only follow the show to see what she actually wrote.

I'm curious to hear from those watching, both show only and from those who are watching who have also read the books, for your opinion of the impact of the amber towards the end of the episode had on you?

I saw the episode was called "Dragonfly in Amber" but I didn't actually watch it, so can't say. (The GF as been watching.) Now that the season is over, I expect her to read the books, since she won't be able to stand the wait until the next season. :D

When is the next book due out, do you know?

So, the producers of the series have cast L-rd John! Like for Jamie, the actor doesn't fit the way I see him in my mind's eye, but I suspect that will be the same with Brianna and Roger as well, when I get to see them.

I hope to sit and watch the DVDs of season two soon.

I also hope if L-rd John's character is well liked, that Starz will consider a spin off based on the stories about him after season three and the completion of filming Voyager.

As far as the next book in the series, Gabaldon says she is still writing it, so no guess on publishing date.

I am up to the 90 minute season finale of the second season, but I don't know when I'll get to it. I am hoping it will be before the dvds of season three arrive...

Lots of deviation from the book in season 2, but not enough to detract from the over all arch of the main plot. I have a friend who nit picks about the changes, but I'm OK with them.

Season 3 premier September 10th!
I still don't have STARZ, so won't see it until after Chr-stmas, but feel free to discuss, as I know the story from the books.

New collection of short stories was just released. Most have been published elsewhere, but there is one new novella and one new L-rd John short included.

No news on book 9, as of yet.

At least her other stuff is connected. I like the novellas, but it is annoying to see a new book listed for her and find it's not a 'real' book.
