He is different than the rest? Why?

1) He is a poltergeist. Poltergeists are defined as ghosts that are violent. No one knows why.
2) He is able to throw things. That indicates solidity. Other ghosties aren't like that.
3) And last, Peeves was probably what you'd call a dirty old man. Either that, or he had a very twisted sense of humour.
Eh, in other word, I have no clue, and I'm trying to type down a theory.

Dunno. I'm not a psychologist.

Maybe aliens experimented on him when he was alive.
Jumba, did you??? "No, no Earth humanoids." Ok.
Well, maybe not.

Hunt JKR down and make her tell us?

Peeves has a great sense of humour.

And, the other ghosts seem to be a bit sad that they died, like they regret it almost - like when they went to Nicks party, they were trying to taste the food and stuff. But Peeves doesn't seem to regret dying at all, he just keeps having fun.
Just a guess.

Yeah, good point. Peeves is the only ghost who's not floating around feeling sorry for himself.

I keep forgetting that Peeves was ever alive - it's not something I've really noticed before. Perhaps that's it; perhaps he's some kind of "career ghost" who isn't actually the remaining bit of a dead person, but some kind of free-roaming spirit in his own right. But then why hang around Hogwarts? It could be that he's the result of some kind of spell that misfired...hmmm...

Yeah! I think they did something badly wrong when they didn't put him in.
