Saw this one tonight. The better for understanding that it is not the Moby Dick story - but the story of the true events around which it was based. I read the book which was a harrowing and sobering read, so it was no surprise that while the film gave a good rendition of the story, it just could not convey the true horror of being adrift for 90 days in an open boat with ever dwindling supplies of food and (more significantly) water. Still - they made a good fist of it and Emmsworth rose well to his role as leading actor. They played a bit fast and loose with the actual whale attack, but hey - you have to allow them a bit of artistic licence.

Haven't read the book, though I have read Moby Dick, but I enjoyed the movie. It was a little less entertaining than I expected from Ron Howard. Even when things aren't happening in his movies, they're usually much more emotionally engaging.

Anyway, I liked it well enough.

Yes, the film was not universally well reviewed, but I think it caught the spirit of the period well and graphically exhibited the hardships whaling men endured on their years long voyages.
