The Witch

David Eggers tale of a mid 17th C. puritan family descending into religious hysteria and madness is an unsettling and unhappy affair. Banished from their austere New-England community and forced to resettle on the edge of an ancient wood, the dysfunctional nature of the family erupts upon the disappearance of the family baby under mysterious circumstances. Bleak and unremitting in equal measure, the film cuts you no slack at all and you are left wondering what in heavens name could have driven people to such cripplingly damaging levels of belief. The acting is of the first order, including that of the youngsters, and if this, his first foray into the field, is an example of Eggers talent as a writer director I think we have great things to look forward to from him in the future.
