Can't post in the tank, can post in mallory's?

Post by Holsety »

I tried to post in the tank, got an error (couldn't preview the msg or post it). I tried to post in mallory's, and it went through. I tried to post in the tank again, same error. I'll check back tomorrow, but let me know if this is a known issue and if there is anything I should do about it.

What was the error?

Were you copying and pasting into the post from somewhere else?

Have you read this thread? The 406 Not Acceptable Error

Seconding Av's suggestion. Many of us have been tripped up by the new security features that forbid special characters, since we cut and paste from elsewhere...and many of those tools automatically substitute "smart quotes" and other print-pretty characters that our hosting infrastructure interprets as non-standard text that could be a hacking attempt.

After posting on the Watch for years, I myself was suddenly stymied by that infamous "406 Not Acceptable" error message!

The problem was I'd copied a quote off a webpage - and it turned out the left-quote and right-quote characters it had were non-ascii characters.

And then even when I knew what to look for, a bit later, it was surprisingly hard to locate all the left-quote and right-quote characters in a body of text!

Or is it not even letting you start to create a post?
(I think the Tank still has slightly different settings from other subforums, right?)

I have been copy pasting and quoting...but the posts have only been copy and pastes from text on the tank. Still, maybe that's the problem. I'll see if only using quotes by using the quote button, as opposed to copy and pasting the completed posts, solves the problem.

If I get the error again I'll post it.

That can totally happen... wayfriend or someone pointed out that it's possible to post a non-ASCII character by using its funky ASCII code and stuff, but that then if someone tries to quote that portion of - bam! It appears as a non-ASCII character and stops that person with a "406 Not Acceptable" error.

I'd rather post in Mallory's than the Tank. Does that count? :-)

I can't post in the Tank, due to the fact that I have standards.

Dandelion will make you wise

I'm afraid there's no denying
I'm just a dandelion
