I continue to be underwhelmed by the reboot series of movies. The writers can't seem to come up with anything original.

Once again we see the Enterprise destroyed.

Once again we see an attempted twist where a supposed alien race is in fact warped race (see Star Trek Nemesis.) This twist was totally predictable.

Once again, the crew/main characters are stranded planet side. In fact, only about 5 minutes of the film occurred on the Enterprise.

Once again, we see a new Enterprise 1701-A.

I just got back from seeing this, and I thought it was pretty good. Better than the other recent ones, in any case.

If I had one main criticism it's that the camera movement and shakycam made it a bit hard to follow the action sometimes.

I've seen Star Trek Beyond and I enjoyed it.
Honestly I had a ho hum feeling about the film before hand and was surprised at how much it re energized my interest in the series. Not that Star Trek Into Darkness was a bad film but because it tread so much familiar territory I wasn't as entertained as I should have been. Beyond does indeed revisit tried and true Star Trek themes and continues to borrow from the original film series on a few occasions but all in all I was pleased and hope that the 4th installment of the reboot series manages to surprise me again.

What was not to like about this movie?!! Totally enjoyed it. There were many things in the movie that give nods to the previous. I saw and heard a few but I'm sure there were some I missed.

On the speakers being broadcast on the Yorktown, was an announcement about the Stargazer.

Scotty mentioned the big green hand (referencing Who mourns for Adonis)

Kirk was drinking Saurian brandy that he had gotten on Thasis. (Charley X came from there)

Is this original Trek? No. Does it have the depth that original Trek has? No. But it is probably the best of the 3 movies so far and on its own is thoroughly enjoyable.

Saw it today, thought it was great.

Haven't seen it yet, but I'm definitely more curious than I was about Into Darkness. Especially as I saw an article about how this one retroactively makes the previous two better, as you can see how Kirk's character is changing over the three.

Now that enough time has passed and we can openly discuss the film without feeling like we're in spoiler territory...


My biggest complaint about Star Trek: Beyond was touched on in the opening post (in the spoiler field) which is that Enterprise was destroyed, again.

The Enterprise isn't just a ship that you can dispose of and randomly replace. Thanks to the way the original series portrayed the Enterprise it became very much a character of its own. In many ways equally as important as any other character.

In the opening moments of Beyond the Enterprise is thoroughly over matched and largely disintegrated with some large sections left intact.

Try to imagine Scotty in a bar room brawl on some planet. At some point a guy pulls out a weapon and disintegrates Scotty's left arm. Scotty keeps fighting and we're sure his arm can be regenerated somehow so we're not too worried at first. Then his left leg is burned off. Then half of his head and finally Mr Scott is now a flopping pile of smoking meat on the floor and we're all aghast. At the end of the episode Scotty's twin brother Angus, who luckily is also a ship's engineer, joins the show and all is supposed to be well.

I believe this was off putting to the audience to some degree. I don't think it was the exact reason that the box office suffered but I don't think it helped anything.
