I saw Bon Jovi opening for KISS back in 1984. They just had their first album out and no one really knew them over here. Metal folks disliked them anyway, because they had a keyboarder. WIMPS!
I remember during their act Jon shouting, "What do ya wanna hear now?" holding his microphone into the audience and the croud mercilessly screamed, "WE WANT KISS! WE WANT KISS". Jon pulled back his mic and said, "Well, okay ... err ... here's our single RUNAWAY!".

a Kiss crowd disliking a hair metal band seems odd.

Got to see Van Halen back around 1978(?) as an opening act.
Was unknown then, but put on a better show than the headliner!
Also caught Quiet Riot in a Des Moines mall,
promoting their first album in front of a record store.
(Thought that they sucked.)
Speaking of "bad billings", how about Jimi Hendrix & The Monkees?
I've seen B-52s open for The Who. B-52s got boo-ed of stage.
