So.....

Post by Vain »

Will it help if KW was upgraded to something more modern, secure etc etc?

If so then let's discuss.

If I look around there seems to be either:

- an upgraded version of this forum software (phpbb)
- something else ala https://vanillaforums.com

What say you fellow Watcheroonies?

Hmmm...Vanilla looks interesting. It has some of the features we have been craving however it would require a full data transfer. I don't know what is involved in upgrading our current phpbb board so I can't form much of an opinion in regard to time, effort and cost comparisons. But if an upgrade is a possibility I support the idea.

According to the Rede of the Clave, this board cannot be upgraded, and all we can do is use phpBB2 in the hope of using it's own power against it. Or has something changed? Have we found a Ward?

Is that what Prothall had to use to open the locked chest found in the catacombs under Mt. Thunder?

That was how I understood it as well.
Also, the album and some other things were custom mods that had no immediate replacement.

Yes it will help. :)

I think an upgrade will probably be easier than a full migration though, but stand to be corrected.

We would in all likelihood lose the custom stuff - but probably should be able to retain the posts.

I think an upgrade without the history would be sad because then the new version would just be an empty shell that would get filled over time.

Vanilla seems to have a way of doing the post migration but I would probably need to experiment and see just how well it can do it.

Personally, I'd hate to lose the world's greatest collection of artwork inspired by Stephen R Donaldson.

I can't imagine what it would be like to start over from scratch if it came to that. Hopefully the most we will have to compromise will be losing the custom features, as Vain put it. However I think this board does need to evolve in some way IMHO.

I followed the link Vain provided for Vanilla so I could learn more. Now I am getting a sidebar ads in various websites and "suggested posts" on FB, all touting Vanilla.

This sort of mindless "look at it once and we will start cramming it down your throat" advert behavior on the intertubes is a PITA.

You should surf incognito :)

We could probably retain parts of the album in some shape - not sure.

What other things are indispensable?

It just occured to me that right now the site's URL includes the model of BB we're using. What would you be planning to do about that aspect?

You don't think it would be possible to create a page at that URL that redirects to the new one?

We don't need a page, just a 301 redirect in the .htaccess file.

The redirect for the main original .com would have to be updated too.

What he said :)

I think another problem might be the sub-forums as they impose a different data structure from the standard data model. Will have to work on that one.

Move all subforums to standard forums -> Transfer data -> Move back into subforum structure?
