The Lost City of Z

This thoughtfully made film stars Charlie Hunnam as the early 20.C explorer Colonel Percy Fawcett whose obsession with finding an apocryphal city in the heart of the Amazon drew him to conduct ever more dangerous and arduous explorations into the depths of that green hell. Supported by Sienna Miller as his long suffering wife, Hunnam displays all of the 'stiff upper lip' dignity of that rigid society, as his dream turns inexorably toward nightmare at the far extremes of what humans are designed to survive. The jungle episodes are interspersed with returns to London to report to the Royal Geographic Society, and some of these scenes provide the most exuberant and entertaining ones in the film. One particularly boisterous one has all of the noise and activity of the UK House of Commons in full swing.
This is not a fast paced action-adventure, but rather a sensible and nuanced account of a man's need to complete the task he has set himself and the consequences that all around him must endure as a result of it. Well worth the couple of hours it lasts.
